Denon DVD-5900 Laser Tag

So I just picked up one of these guys. The unit plays CDs, but the DVD function does not work. Not sure why I care, but I'm a perfectionist.

The transport mechanism seems to work fine. I'm guessing the unit must have separate lasers for CDs and for DVDs. Also, the unit is supposed to play SACD CDs and MP3 files.

I haven't tried these latter formats, but it does beg a question: if 2 lasers are in the unit, which plays SACD and MP3s? I'm guessing the laser used to read CD?

That being asked, my next problem would seem to be determining if the laser for the DVD operates, right? How the heck do I do that without putting out my eye?

If it carries any weight, I'm pretty good with turntables ...

Yes, CDs and DVDs require different wavelengths of light to read, so they would have different lasers. Not sure about SACDs, but if I had to guess, it would be the same laser as DVDs, since they have much higher capacity than CDs. And the MP3 disks would be read by whatever format they were written to - if they were recorded to a CD-R then the CD laser would read them; if they were recorded to a DVD-R (not sure how many players support doing that), then the DVD laser.
 
On the high end Denon DVD players there is a way to turn off the video laser so only the audio laser works. Check and see if that's the case. They did that for audiophiles to make them happy. :)
