Denon music search not working

I recently got a Denon DRM-400. My first tape deck in at least 15 years. It sounds great, much better than I remember cassettes ever did.

But there is a small hitch. The music search function for fast forwarding/rewinding doesn't work. Do you have any tips on how to fix it?

There should be one or two tape lifters that are supposed to allow FF or RW while the tape barely contacts the playback head. A few decks actually have a PB head retractor that lowers that head a smidge while doing a search.

My Pioneer needs to be in playback mode for the music search to work. I'm not sure with a Denon deck but I would check that first.

Suggest you get an operator or service manual. It's possible that there is one downloadable from HIFIEngine.com - a site that requires you to register but offers free downloads. It's the sister site of vinylengine.com. If they don't have one, do a web search.
 
The music search function I've used on non-Denon decks also require about 3 seconds of silence between tunes for the detection to work. If your deck has similar constraints, but your tapes aren't arranged that way, it may work inconsistently or not at all. The gap works out to less than 6" of tape, zipping by at FF or RW speeds.

Are you pressing play and ff at the same time?
