Denon POA 2200 repair/recap - some notes

Nothing earth-shaking here but thought I'd post some pictures and notes for anyone who runs into a similar situation.

I acquired a POA2200 power amp last year. The previous owner gave full disclosure that it seemed to have intermittent problems, but I couldn't make it misbehave. Actually the original arrangement was that I was going to repair it for him, but after weeks of No Problem Observed I offered to buy it - he'd already replaced it in his system - and we arranged a suitable bargain price.

When the gremlin finally emerged, it was in the form of a mechanical rattling sound, almost certainly a relay flutter. Which relay, since there are three in the unit? The symptom continued when I turned off both sets of outputs, so it had to be the protection relay.

Hard to tell from the service manual, but it's found under the bottom cover.

If a relay is staying closed but not maintaining continuity through the switch contacts, it makes sense to replace it or maybe you can get away with cleaning the contacts. But if it isn't staying closed, the relay is not usually at fault. When I repaired televisions in a previous career, it was de rigueur to find and replace a driver transistor and flyback diode (in this case TR102 and D205), because it often worked and because the parts were cheap and almost always on hand: you just needed a general purpose NPN transistor and rectifier diode. I replaced those, and C205 at the same time just because it was a 30+ year old electrolytic. None of the parts measured bad, but with an intermittent symptom you don't always expect that anyway. Looked for bad solder around the relay coil legs, didn't find any, but resoldered there anyway.

The symptom was now improved but didn't quite go away. Instead of rapid fluttering, you'd just get random isolated clicks every few minutes. So I included some 5v zener diodes in my next Mouser order, and when D206 got replaced, the symptom went away entirely. I suspect D206 and C205 were responsible together.

So much for the repair. Before talking about the recap, it should be mentioned that whenever the bottom cover is removed from this model, you're at risk of breaking front panel switches. The service manual warns about it. Never allow the front panel to bear the weight of the amplifier. Even when working on the main amp boards, which are accessible by removing just the top cover, you still need to do some stuff from the bottom because there are screwed-in ground connections and wire guides down there. So I used a nice thick book to keep the switches safe.

I found just one cap that was bulging, C589 in the left channel.

Denon uses quite a few electrolytics in this amp,

but most are small, and a recap wasn't going to break the bank. I did leave alone the big power filters in the center of the unit. Where possible I used audio grade replacements: Nichicon UFG for the 71v and 15v rail filters, Silmic II for most small value caps in and around the signal path. In a few locations calling for a low value / high voltage combination, I just made sure to use 105C rated caps instead of 85C.

Just one minor spec change was involved. C558 was originally a 1uf 100v electrolytic responsible for locally smoothing the power rails for both IC502 and IC504, which are involved in the DC servo and bias circuits respectively. That seemed a little meager to me. The schematic shows 30v across it, so 100v is overkill. I replaced it with a 4.7uf 63v WIMA film cap (marked with white arrow in picture below), bypassed on the back side with a 0.1uf ceramic, added a 0.1uf ceramic across pins 4-8 of IC502 and yet another across the same pins of IC504. (This all refers to the right channel - for the left channel the locations are C557, IC501, IC503.)

After this I set the bias as indicated in the service manual and buttoned it up.

The recap makes it sound like an entirely new amplifier. Initially it seemed to be a little on the warm side, then after a few hours the high frequencies started to assert their proper place -- just with any previous tizzies tamed. You know how breakin is: it's hard to know how much is to be attributed to physical changes in the unit, especially with electrolytic caps involved, and how much is just your own head recalibrating to the music. In the end, I'm very pleased and enjoying a bit of a sonic honeymoon with it. I've been testing it first with my small-speaker system (Definitive Tech Celsius) and about to move it to the system with the Boston A150s. Nothing in this house is dying for 220wpc, to be fair!

Thank you very much @duncan for this post. I am in progress of solving similar "relay flutter" in my POA-2400.

Tracked it to the same board under to bottom cover, wanted to start with relay itself and with the C205 cap. Now I have nice confirmation and parts list for replacement. :)

In case you go on from there to a recap of the amp boards, I should mention there's one thing I'd change if doing it again: I've since read from some people that they don't like to use ceramic bypass caps in audio equipment because of potential microphonics issues. Everything sounds great to me and so I'm leaving this one alone, but film should be almost as easy to make fit in the places where I added ceramics.

Have finished my unit today. Following was done:

- replaced 220uF capacitor
- replaced 5V zener diode
- replaced 2.2 (4.7 for EU) ohm 10W resistor (somebody was in there before me and changed it for two 80's stock 6W resistors in parallel resulting in higher resistance than the one noted in schematic)

It looks stable and the problem did not returned so far. In case it returns I will change also the transistor with the other diode.

UPDATE: Well there was reason why the resistors were in parallel, the in rush current kills the single 10W resistor pretty easily. The 10W resistor mentioned in the schematics was something special or a typo. So much to improving things that work o_O.

UPDATE 1: For Europe it should be 4.7 ohm 10W resistor (R101)

So the whole story is that there were two 5.5 ohm resistors in parallel from previous repair which equals 2.75 ohm which kind of mislead me and I confirmed the 2.2 value for myself from service manual, but did not read the "fine print" describing differences between regions.

So the correct value should be 4.7 ohm.

The previous tech made the value too low, not too high? If going even lower made get things hot, it's understandable. :D So I guess you ended up installing a single 4.7ohm 10 watt, like it probably had when new?

Thank you for your congratulation. Unfortunately the things went south in significant way.

I was testing the unit, relay was working it was turned on for about 30 minutes. All was ok. I have put the bottom cover back and turned it again on and off. Than it stoped to start properly. I have checked the 10w resistor and it was open. I have find out that in real I have Asia unit converted to EU (voltage switch to 240V and with installed 3 prong grounded power cord). So the 2.2 was ok.

The resistor saved the amp => other short or malfunctioning soft start. Anyways I was dumb/lazy enough to work on it without dim bulb tester. And I was also dumb enough to put more parallel resistors there.

- one 2.2 ohm 10W - open
- two 10 ohm 5W in parallel smoked but did not open switched the unit off
- three 10 ohm 5W in parallel allowed enough current to blow capacitor C574 (vented and released magic smoke)

So the unit is toast and waits damage inspection. No idea for now what caused the short and where it is.

Sorry to hear it, but no need to kick yourself. You might want to start a thread in the solid state subforum. There are some denizens there with considerably more experience than I have on amp troubleshooting. Hopefully it will still turn out to be something fairly simple; in any event it's good to get more sets of eyes on the project at this point.
 
Thoresui, not sure where you are locatd, but I have a couple of boards out of a denon poa2200 that I am not going to use. Amp was working fine when I pulled them out. They do need a recap, one bulging cap. But as is, they do play music. I pulled them and replaced them with honey badger boards, so have no use for them. Shoot me a PM if you want to chat. Little addendum:

- I have not replaced the TR102 and D205 in the first round, did observed the soft start relay intermittent clicks for couple of months
- recently they returned not very often, I have listened to the power amp with speaker relay off to be sure it is the soft start
- replaced the TR102 and D205 (with general purpose NPN and 1n4148)

Will see if it helps.
 
Just be aware, when using a DBT with a unit that has a soft start resistor and relay, choose the DBT bulb wattage very carefully. Because when using a DBT this can lower voltages enough so the soft start relay does not activate. Leaving the (possibly underrated) soft start resistor to carry the current for the whole amplifier, which can make the resistor get very hot, easily exceed its specification and quite likely fail. ;)
 
My modified poa-2200 was also experiencing random relay clicking. I replaced the circled items, and cleaned the relay contacts with deoxit and a paper towel. Listened to it for an hour earlier today, no clicking. I'll update in a while as to whether the issue comes back. I measured the cap, and it was significantly out of spec. I replaced with a higher voltage rated unit, same capacitance value.
 
Update. No more clicking. Several hours of operation now with no clicking. If this does not solve the problem, you may have an issue upstream at the +-25v power supply, check the rectifier diodes, the filter cap (1000uf 35v in my case). Alternately, any of the protection circuits also shut off this relay when triggered, but then your amp would not be making sound so doesn't really apply in this particular condition.
 
@SummitP thanks for update. My POA-2400 still intermittently clicks. Im busy with other projects so it waits in the row (or until it fails properly).
 
Duncan i have also one POA 2200 and now i work to recap. The 1uF/100V on power amp have on back the folowing mark: "BP 85ºC" .
BP i understand that is bipolar capacitor.
What type do you put, electrolitic or bipolar?
 
C557,C555,C553,C531,C529 for example for 1 channel. In total there are 6 1uF/100 per channel.
Oposite to capacity value is the mark that i write, BP 85ºC where BP is written inside of rectangle and below this is "M"

Okay. Well it should be mentioned that bipolar/nonpolar and electrolytic aren't mutually exclusive. Your picture is of a cap that fits both descriptions. However the parts list in the service manual doesn't show any of those as nonpolar, so I doubt it's a requirement. If memory serves, I used 1uf 100v electrolytic caps in all but two of those locations. However they were polar types, and they were rated at 100 C instead of 85 C. I inserted them according to the polarity marked in the service manual (and I think those polarity markings were also shown on the board).

I don't know if there is a benefit to using nonpolar caps in any of those locations. Could be that during the production run for your amp they had simply a surplus of that type on hand. Using nonpolar caps there certainly won't hurt anything.

My exceptions were C557 and C558 -- see first post in this thread.
 
I saw that there is no BP on scheme.I will put electrolitics and for C557/C558 i have only 1uF WIMA film cap. By the way, this caps are between pins 8 and 4 of op amp.
One more question i have, if you adjust distortions VR505/506 and how(with diy tools)?
