Denon Receiver Goes Right Into Protection Mode

I've had this DRA-1025r TOTL Denon receiver since the mid-late 1980's. It's been flirting with protection-mode-for-no-reason for the last five years. If it's been powered on for more than 10 seconds without going into PM, it remains out of PM and all is well. Today, it decided it prefers protection mode and never wishes to leave. Even with the speakers unplugged from the back of the receiver, it waits about 2-5 seconds after powering on and then clicks into protection mode.

Any ideas?
