Denon's new cd player DCD-900NE

I'm looking to replace my excellent Marantz 5 disc player w/ a single cd player in the $400-500 range too squeeze a bit more sound out of my cds. I was looking at the Denon DCD-800NE and see that it's been replaced w/ a better 900NE for $550.

in that price its as good as anything similar. Looks good to me.

overall I think it will just come down to preference after you got something in this caliber. Using them as a transport to a dual mono high tech super DAC is only gonna achieve even the slightest noticeable improvements. which in point the format is really the thing that needs upgrading.

and then consider all the other steps in your system that might be limiting the sound.

I've always admired Teac's latest efforts. Unusual combining a tuner and cdp but I'll bet it can make a nice compact system.

I like that the review I posted about the Denon says it's more analytical and transparent than the smoother and rounder sounding Marantz CD6007, since I'm already experiencing the Marantz sound and find it not to my taste.

The review I posted also goes on to say its 'able to reveal even finer details, with a remarkable for the total absence of background noise, contributing to the transparency and clarity of the soundstage.'

Here's what I have right now...so the CDP does seem like the weakest link.

That looks good. I like the setup ,the older carousel CDP is probably the weakest link.

yeah that little TEAC has all kinds of nifty features and abilities. I want to build a very compact yet dynamic midfi system in a 2.2 and TEAC seemed like a no brainer. thats pretty much their whole concept for living in tiny Japanese apartments. the teac cdp/fm and a schiit headphone/volume control amp is all I got ordered right now.

I got a few interesting ideas to rig it together. but I got some time to think it over. it will just be a fancy headphone rig with sennheiser hd 650 headphones to start.

I purchased the Marantz locally as a temporary unit a few years ago after being w/o a cdp for years. I sold a Cary cdp a long bit ago and purchased a Yamaha bdp for an all-in-one system combining tv/movies and music. Since then I've separated into 2 different systems. I'll like to buy a an audiophile unit but just don't have the money or the will, since I don't use cds all that much. The Denon DCD900NE seems like a lot of player for $550.

Yeah, the denon will be comparable in real world testing to any "Audiophile " higher priced cdp..to notice the difference you'll need a musically treated room and a 20k system.

Rotel and Yamaha offer similar units that are price competitive. I haven't heard any of them.

For just CDs, I'd spend a little more and get a Leak transport in a wood cabinet and a separate DAC.

But I'm crazy for wood cabinets.

Woodgrain panels aside, unless your feeding the transport into a super advanced DAC minimum of a dual mono 32 kb your pretty much down grading these fairly well equipped CD players in the $500 dollar range, and by then are you really only paying for a CD player or does it include the cost of having a 2k DAC?

How does the FM tuner in your PD-301 sound?

I just bought one of these players, put in Without A Sound by Dinosaur Jr. and could not be happier. Was running a crappy dvd player into a crappy tv into a crappy dac into my Yamaha a-s1000. Already noticing background guitar layers i wasn't hearing before. Everything just sounds.....right.

This new player coincides with my brand new broken ankle. Lots of listening ahead of me, nothing else to do haha.

Was going to buy the Marantz cd6007 before finding out about this player. Happy I discovered this opposed to the hideously ugly Marantz and for 2hundo $ less.

Recommend to anyone looking for an "affordable" cd unit
