Deoxit question for the experts

I have a SAE 2800 parametric EQ that needs a good cleaning. All of the controls are sliders. Should I use Deoxit D5 first, and then Faderlube, or should I skip the D5 and use the Faderlube by itself? Also, is it OK to squirt the Deoxit in from the front? I removed the faceplate, but it would be nearly impossible for me to remove the PCB behind the sliders (which are sandwiched between the faceplate and the PCB) without inflicting damage to something.

I checked out Arkay's thread, Deoxit for Dummies, but there is no mention of sliders. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The F5 does have flushing action, so if the controls aren't too bad, you could just use the F5. If the controls are badly oxidized, you'll have to use D5. Follow with Faderlube to replace the lubricant that the D5 flushes away.
 
That's what I was thinking too. They aren't very scratchy. How about going in from the front?
 
Do whatever will get Deoxit into the switch, so it will actually get to the contacts. Find a gap in the case of the slider, and shoot it in there. If you can do it from the front, good.
 
Thanks Jailtime. It looks like it should be no problemo. I can lay the EQ on it's back and let mean old Mr. Gravity take over.
 
hey guys, i have dexoit, and also a can of this (aqs) ames-quick-spray.. switch and contact cleaner.. would the aqs prettymuch be the same as deoxit?
 
Deoxit is the only contact cleaner endorsed by anyone on this forum that I know of. It is simply the best and most dependable. Do it once and sit back and listen to the music & enjoy, CB
 
IMO, there are a lot of contact cleaners available which people have had varying degrees of success with. I've not heard of anyone complaining about Deoxit, except for the price and sometimes limited availability due to one's location. It's good stuff. I'm not familiar with the Ames product.

How can you be an AK'er for 4 years and not know the answer to this question?

As someone has already noted, virtually every thread discussing this topic makes it clear that most general purpose contact cleaners ARE NOT Equivalent to DeoxIT D5.
 
thanks for the replys, yea i found this spray.. just about full, its the large can size. (spraypaint size) and i figured if its on the same page as deoxit i could use it on less important projects.. as the can of deoxit i have is tiny.. dont wanna waste the good stuff :D
 
Not knowing if this is true of your unit, you may want to check on this. Some faders were designed to look like faders, but are actually a regular pot on a handle that is rolled across a rubber surface to turn the pot's shaft. Pouring Deoxit in the slot of those would be a waste.

I have dealt with faders that were so dirty that I ended flushing them with 92% isopropyl alcohol and setting them upside down to drain and dry before using the Deoxit again.
 
Interesting...from looking behind the PCB when I had it open, I think these are sliders, not pots. I'm planning on starting with a small amount of Deoxit right near the handle and letting the back and forth motion work it in. I'll report back this weekend.

I have the SAE 2800 and also SAE 1800 Parametric equalizers but both weak or no sound when the Level Attenuate sliders are all the way up.
Someone experienced that? Maybe they need D5 cleaners?
 
After you flush and re lubricate the sliders they may be squeaky clean and be difficult to move without binding.
If they're not too bad just exercise them and they should clean up by themselves.
Otherwise, use as little of the F5 as needed to get the job done.
Before Deoxit Channel Master Shield was the industry standard for decades. The EPA pulled it because it used Freon as the propellant !
