About dang time, too.

Design Acoustics PS-10a "Point Source" speakers, with stands, $9.99 each at a local thrift store. The down-firing woofers appear to be in good shape; no rotted surrounds. In fact, from the design of the surrounds on these, I suspect that they're not susceptible to the type of foam rot that I hear most PS-10 speakers suffered from. Was the PS-10a a redesign?

Ooh, and they're mirrored! I've never had mirrored drivers in a pair of speakers before. Cool! Do the tweeters go the inside or the outside?

nice. check the downfiring woofer for rot, too...i've wanted a pair of those for the longest time, even though ar-4ax and epi 100 fit the same niche, basically. cool design.

I did - no rot. That's what I was referring to - I think they have a suspension design that looks like it is not made of the typical foam; so I'm not even sure they can rot as foam surrounds often do. I know the PS-10 speakers were known for the woofer rot in the downward-firing woofers, but these not only don't seem to have it, they don't look like they would, given the surrounds seem to be made of something other than the typical foam.
 
Spoke too soon - hooked them up and one woofer is not firing. Hmmm. That seems strange. The surround is good, the woofer travels in and out well, no scratchy bits. Seems odd that it would be related to the crossover, so perhaps the woofer got blown completely out. I guess I'll have to dig into it... well, at least they were cheap!

Should be an ez fix, so hope you get it firing soon.

I've had both PS-10's and 10a's. They were both mirror-imaged and both needed their woofers refoamed. Perhaps yours were refoamed and a wire to the woofer was not properly affixed. As for the 10a being a redesign of the 10, I remember it being more of an evolution. The 10 was square and the 10a is a bit taller. The 10a is rated for more power. Other than that, I don't recall any huge difference in sound.

They are surprisingly nice little speakers. Love the form-factor!

Thanks, guys. The design of the woofer surrounds do not look like foam - I don't think they were refoamed, they don't have foam. More of a modern inverted rubber kind of surround to my eyes. I'll post some pics soon. But when I pull them, I'll definitely check for loose wires and so on. Should be fairly easy to diagnose; if I take signal directly to the non-firing woofer, either it will or won't start firing, eh?
 
Update: The woofers had no rot; but one was dead and gone. Could not make it go for anything. Replaced with Goldwood GW-210/4 10" OEM Woofer 4 Ohm from PE on the advice of a user on Yahoo! Design Acoustics group. They were backordered - on sale for $15.98 ea, no wonder.

They arrived today; dropped them in tonight.

Wow! I am loving these speakers. No idea why - from the build quality, I would not have thought it. Nice deep tight bass, nice soundstage. They'll be on display at the next SMAC I am able to host and you SMAC guys can see and hear for yourselves. Well worth the effort to replace the woofers.

Are they drop in replacements? I know the back of the magnet hitting the mids enclosure inside can be problematic? I might actually fix the pair I have if so.

A second look tells me that the PS-10 and the PS-10A are different in the shape and size category. Bummer.

I'm no expert, but I heard this as well. They are indeed drop-in on mine. They're deeper than the originals but still fit. If your cabs are smaller, they might not. Sorry!

The PS-10 appear more square than the PS-10a, the PS-10a appears to be more retangular. I'll have to pull them down and do some measurements.

I see this is a really old thread, but I just scored a pair of the PS-10a's today at a local goodwill - $15. I'll hook them up tonight and see if they still work. I'm guessing no, but we'll see!
