DESIGN ACOUSTICS. PS-3 Speakers. Are they any good?

Kermit the Frog
I have recently happened by a pair of PS-3 speakers from design acoustics on eBay. The seller tells me they're good, and not only that they're cheap. They were originally just shy of 70 dollars on the listing, but when I watched the listing, the seller immediately sent me an offer which reduced the price to 55 dollars. I am extremely tempted to buy them but there are two issues
1. I am unable to find adequate info regarding their quality, in both sound and build

2. it does not include the subwoofer, which I imagine will detract from the sound quality by quite a bit.

I was originally going to buy a pair of high end Yamaha speakers, but these are much cheaper and a lot smaller, and that's a plus for me.

What do I do? the impulsive side of me says take the deal but the reasonable side of me says buy the Yamaha speakers. I'm split in two.

i'm not familiar with the ps-3 but i would expect the woofers to need to foam like the rest of the series.

Probably, I got a pair of PS-6's that both needed surrounds. If I had it to do over again I wouldn't spend the money, I'm not that impressed with them. They're not bad but there's better for the same money

I have a set of DA PS-6 speakers, they're not bad but personally I would lean towards Yamaha being a better bet. I've read that Design Acoustic speakers are made with average components by people that know what they're doing.

Translation, for what they are they're pretty good. But yet lacking

I have a pair of PS-3s in use right now. They are background speakers in our kitchen.

It is a well built little speaker with a solid wood cabinet and decent drivers. IIRC it uses a 3.5" rubber surround woofer and a polycarbonate dome tweeter. They were designed, maybe even sold with a sub to fill in the bottom octave, which the will need.

They are nice looking and sounding compact speakers. If you are going for looks, this is nice. If you want better sound and looks, go with a Realistic Minimus 7W for deeper base and smoother top end. Just my $0.02
