desperately seeking belts (onkyo belts to be precise)

I have this beautiful ONKYO Ta 623 but all the belts have perished!
A broken belt itself would not be a problem but these have actually perished , turned into a gooey substance. I can't measure it - so I am lost.

Is there anyone out there who has any info on the measurements of these belts.

I tried everywhere but got nowhere. Can anyone help please?

I have tried it with a rubber band and everything seems to work fine apart from the rubber noise.

I have inherited this tape deck and by the looks of it it was hardly used which is obviously why all belts have vanished (stuck to the little wheels).

It would be a shame to dump this beauty just because of those belts.

Any suggestion would be a good suggestion!

thanks for your help but that is really where my problem is: I cannot measure my belt as I don't have the old belt - the old belt is in thousand pices.

The only way to find the length of the belt is to measure the old one I have been told time and again. I am just about to give up, what a shame...

Use a piece of string or thicker thread to simulate the belt. Cut it measure it and order one. Too long then order the next smaller size. Reverse if it's too short.

though turntableneedles.com doesn't have that model listed, they may be able to help.

With measuring length (if you do not have the old belt) yeah do the string thing and subtract 3 to 5% to allow for stretching of the belt since you want it to be snug (but not TOO snug). If it's too loose then you get a lot of flutter and drive problems. Too tight and it could cause noise and premature bearing wear on capstans and the motor.

Are you able to tell the shape of the belt from what is left? Like square,, flat, round etc? what about width?

Here is their page about measuring...

It explains what to do if you just cannot measure your old belt.

:sigh: Did you not read the link I posted it explains what to do if you do not have a belt to measure.

I did read your message and your link and thank you for that.
the instructions are great but it is difficult doing this in practise. I will have another go on the week end.
thanks again.

Have you tried Vintage Electronics? They have belt kits for many different decks.

Edit: I checked and they offer belts for a TA-630. Don't know if your model uses the same belt. If not, you're just going to have to get a measurement.

Is it possible a shop manual could help lead the way? i'm sure they don't list belt measurements, but perhaps the part number would be a clue that leads to finding it? i would think Onkyo would not be as rough to find, due to their large presence in the Prime Audio world, but i've never taken this task.

i bought a supposedly working NAD 6100 Monitor Series. When it arrived, no worky. It turned out that my belt was just like yours...chewed gum. i was fortunate that a friend on here knows a guy in Germany that knows NAD inside out. i had to order the belt from Germany, and just put it on yesterday. If i had been forced to do the string thing, it would have been a bear to deal with, as the flywheel and pulley arent easily accessed to do something like that. It was actually easier to place the belt, than measuring would have been.

The string method is good advice, especially if you can get to the belt system without too much difficulty. The other is to keep watching the thread, as i am sure there are some Onkyoheads that could tell you a lot, but they may not log on as often as some of us do. :)

Best of Luck with that beauty!

Cheers,

I have tried the TA 630 manual but unfortunately it appears totally different as the 630 has a flat belt and it looks like my 623 belt is square. Also by the looks of it there are more (3?) belts but at the moment I was only concentrating on the main from the motor to the flywheel.
The measuring method sounds logical but it is a nightmare to do. I will take the rubber band (which serves as a belt currently) out and use this as a guide for length but is haven't got a clue how much it is stretched when working?
By the looks of it this will keep me busy for some time.
I would have thought there might be some ONKYO Gurus out there. I have searched all possible forums (in Germany as well as UK) - I won't give up though.

Studio sound sells generic belt kits(no affiliation). It gives an assortment of sizes to try out. You'll have to blaze this trail for others to follow.

Sooner or later you are going to have to deal with the belt routing. If it's one of those awkward situations, here is one way you could measure -

use a piece of tape to attach one end of the string to the most accessible pulley. Then route the string around all other junk. When it comes back around to the starting point where you taped the string, make sure both ends of the string are tight (no need to neanderthal it, just so there is no string slack)

Then using a marker, draw a line where the strings meet. Then remove the string and measure between the marks. You now have the length.

I have messed with a few decks where the belt route was really tight so yes it can be a pain.

Have you contacted the Australian Onkyo distributor? http://www.ambertech.com.au/

Also the global web site suggests support@hifi-city.com in the UAE as a service centre.
