The universe is a big place, perhaps the biggest.
Arrrggh. I have a Sherwood S-7100A receiver that I took out of the rotation a year ago due to scratchy pots. So a couple weeks ago I decided to take it apart and clean them up with deoxit.

Sprayed a little (I try not to overdo it) in each one then got to the volume/on-off control pot which was the worst. Started working it back and forth and the click for the on/off function disappeared. It's gone. Nothing. Won't turn on, won't click.

So I'm guessing I've toasted this? Is there any fix or does it need to be replaced. If so, what am I looking for at parts express?

bypass the on-off switch. use something else to turn it on and off, a P-E switch mounted on the side of the unit, for example, since you wanted to use something from P-E. A number of switches have reached their operations limits on vintage gear.

Add some Faderlube to your kit. Also Caig Gold or Shield also. You have possibly created a situation where you flushed all the internal lubrication out. The D5 Deoxit also has a good amount of solvent in it which can dissolve the traces in the pots etc. I use 100% Deoxit,Shield and Faderlube to avoid the solvent. Also, at times, I use a needle bottle of isopropyl alcohol to flush years of crud out of switches and pots first. Don't give up; this has happened before.
 
Eh, you've probably just stirred the corrosion around. With older pots, I've often found that three to five applications are necessary to get them working well.

If the switch isn't even making a "click" feel, you might have dislodged it from it's connection with the shaft.
 
With that particular Sherwood I understand that the plastic in the on/off switch degrades over time and can be finally worn through by use of cleaners and solvents. It can also fail on its own. I had one of those for awhile (sweet little receiver, BTW) and knowing of the issue I only cleaned the pot with a dry brush, and it held as long as I owned the unit. I agree with the posters above that your best bet is to either install an on/off switch or, even easier, get it into the "on" position and connect it to a power strip with an an/off switch.
 
Roypercy is right on. that unit volume control with the on/off switch is a no no for straight deoxit or the older formula. kills the on/off switch as your solvent was not plastic safe. Hopefully the vol. pots still work as the wipers are subject to same chemical erosion/damage. The on off switch terminals are located on the back of the pot asm. I recommend discharging mains caps before working on it.

I didn't even think about any issues as it's the only thing I own with such a setup. It all makes sense and now I know.
Yes they are sweet little receivers so I do want to get it back into the rotation.
 
I got lucky and one of my parts units had a nice Alps switch that amazingly had the exact same bolt pattern as a completely different brand/unit I needed to fix, and it even had a shielded snubber. I swapped it over, everything lined up, and was even able to use the factory button. This was a much better solution than bypassing, though it was in another brand. Even better, is the Alps was much smoother operating than the one it replaced.
 
Billy, let us in on what parts unit could supply a donor switch for the Sherwood, lot of people have been looking for a solution for a long time.
