Determining the age of Acoustic Research AR2ax

Cool_Manchu

Time to play B-sides...
Hello Audio-karmans...

How can I determine the age of my Acoustic Research AR2ax speakers?

My serial numbers are:

AX 89653
AX 89655

So close to a sequenced pair! Alright who has the AX 89654? Fess up! :)

AFAIK, no hint of the manufacturing year is evident in an AR serial number. However, from what I've read, the changeover from the older, pre-1970 version of the 2ax (cloth surround woofer, orange dome tweeter) began around serial # 125,000 somewhere around 1970. If true, then your serial numbers would indicate a manufacturing date sometime in the late 1960s. A more accurate way would be to pull the woofer and check the date stamped on the frame. Hope this helps. :D

I think he is right on it! Don't know if it is worth pulling a woofer to find out though.

Jim

I was mainly curious if they were pre-or-post 1970...and as always, you guys come through with the knowledge. :)

I love this place!
