Wow. What excellent advice. With your collective help, I just removed the burned out bulb from its socket in less then 2 minutes. It turns out that the bulb is just a pull-in, push-out device. But there's a very important caveat. You must first get some slack in the 2 bulb wires. They are pulled so tight, at a right angle, that it's very hard to remove the bulb easily. To get some slack in the wires, you just have to gently prise up the 2 metal tabs that serve as a strain relief, and hold the wires very tightly in place. Once I did that, I could very easily pull out some excess wire for slack, then just reach down with my fingers and pull the bulb straight out of its holder. I also could push it straight back in, with complete ease.
Other caveat: As many folks pointed out, the whole dial pointer assembly is very fragile. I would have almost certainly broken something had I not been forewarned to be careful. I had to take great care in holding the pointer assembly completely immobile as I "operated" on it. Now, I just need to get another bulb! This one is exactly 3mm in diameter, so I thought for a moment about a 3mm warm white LED, with bridge rectifier and resisitor, but I'm just going to get one from Radio Shack!
Thanks EVERYBODY,
Tom
