Diamond in the Rough

Red Dots = Missing Knobs
Hello everyone,
This is my first time posting here at AudioKarma.org and let me say that this site is Outstanding with all the Info/Support that is offered...Thanks for being here.

My title is a Diamond in the Rough because about 1 year ago my former employer was cleaning shop and without knowing the true value of this diamond, He tossed out a Pioneer SX-1980 because it was missing 15 of the knobs.

My question before you is this? Can anyone tell me of a location in Rochester,NY 14622 where this Diamond in the Rough can be taken for a complete Restoration...Thank You for all your help...

Can't help you with where to go for repair but hang on, someone will come along and make some suggestions. :music:

That SX-1980 is a great find and well worth bringing back to life. It's the "monster" many Pioneer collectors hunt for.

Welcome to AK, hang around for awhile, you will enjoy the ride.

And now we know why he is a former employee.

paver3535,
Welcome to AK!
Awesome dumpster diving job on that 1980.
If it were me, I'd pack that monster up and ship it to AK's very own EchoWars. He's already rebuilt several 1980's and would know his way around one better than anyone else. Send him a PM and see when he would have the time to go through it.

Retro's exactly right, EchoWars is THE MAN when it comes to 1980's, having rebuilt and resurrected more a few of the beasts. I'd give him a shout and see when and if he's got time to give it the attention it so richly deserves.

Great find in your 1980, and welcome to AK... If you're willing to dive into a dumpster, you'll fit in just fine around here.

That brings up an important question...how do you climb out of a dumpster while carrying a SX-1980? :D

Hello Again everyone
Let me say here at Audio Karma.org this site is Outstanding with all the Info/Support that is offered...Thank You for all your help...

Retro Stereo & Fotno Thanks so much for the recommendation about sending this unit to EchoWars I have researched AK about his talent in breathing new life into a SX-1980.

In closing let me say it's true when they say that Another Mans Trash is Another Mans Treasure

I have 7 of the lever switch knobs and the two small phono / mic knobs from a scrapper. See the add in parts swap for the SX1280.

Great Save

There is some things you should know about Echo Wars (Glenn). I had my Kenwood KR-9600 redone by him.

1. He will keep you informed every step of the way.
2. You can trust this man completely. What l mean is you could give him a blank certified check and tell him to fill it out when he is done. You would have nothing to fear.
3. Glenn is reasonable to a fault. He treats each repair as if he was paying for it. I am very serious about this, my carestaff that work for me in Canada make considerlaby more than l am sure Glenn makes.
4. Your receiver will sound fantastic and will probably sing sweetly for another 25 years. :thmbsp:

P.S. I am not a relative of Echo Wars - wish l was. :D

Welcome to AK, thats a real good dumpster find! But how could you improove over time if you start at this high level? Next you need to find a complete SPEC rack at the dump!!!
