Diatone help!!

I totally came up on a set of diatone speakers, model number ds-503
Got em for free, found out they sound pretty good, upon further inspection the dome on the midrange on both speakers is broken. I took it to the local shop, they have never heard of Diatone.
I just broke the rest of the dome off so it wouldn't scratch while playing, but now it's a little harsher, I'd like to find a replacement/recone/a fix to this. Pics are below. The model number on the speaker itself is dm-6501

Very good line of speakers that were not sold in the US and real hard to get parts for. Try the japan Ebay
 
Yeah, those domes are boron. This isn't a simple replacement job/find what fits.

Also, if the shop has not heard of Diatone, take them somewhere else or more likely track down replacement drivers (probably your best bet and probably not cheap).

They're worth repairing and I bet they'd sound better than 75% of what is talked about as a great speaker here. Diatone is Mitsubishi, and they also made drivers for other manufacturers.
 
I would guess that the harshness you hear from the midrange drivers might possibly be due to voice coil rub. With the domes removed the driver diaphragms have lost some structural integrity. Gluing on a dust cap would not correct a voice coil rub problem if one exists.

If I had a pair of such speakers I picked up cheap, I'd be looking for a reasonable cost replacement midrange driver with similar specs. I'd expect getting stock replacements would be very expensive, if you could source them at all. Have fun!

Most auctions on Japanese eBay block overseas bids. These services bid for you (from a Japanese account) and handle shipping and insurance.

I've never used one, but some AKers have. The alternative is visiting the Japanese bookstore in NYC (for example), buying copies of MJ and Stereosound magazines, and e-mailing/calling advertisers (surprisingly, even though these are Japanese magazines, the ads often have lots of English text) until you find one who's willing to work with you. Back in the day I had good luck getting Diatone (full range) drivers from these guys:

That midrange may have been manufactured by Coral, could you take a picture of the backside of the midrange and post it here?
 
Too bad you removed the reflectors. I think you could have taken the magnet off and re-shaped the dome from the inside. Really a Mickey Mouse repair but maybe it could have worked.
