Diatone speaker question...!

The mid speaker of a diatone ds-33 exv got busted. It belongs to my friend. Today i removed the speaker from the box to give it to the repairman. The inside of the box is hollow. No fillings, nothing. Can this be possible? Every speaker box i haven opened had some kind of filling. Does this mean previous owner has screwed up with these?
