last night i made a bit of an impulse decision and ordered some elac "sensible speaker cables." now that the gin has worn off, i realize these cables come with banana plugs on both ends. will i be able to connect these to my pioneer sx-850?

Yes, language isn't quite right since some read this forum with youngs-uns. Might report your first post and ask for a title edit or they'll probably see it and do it for you.

You can get female banana plugs and solder a chunk of wire to em to make an adapter. I have a few sets. These are the best Chinese audio thing I own. From the bay, Insulated 4mm Banana Female Jack will find em. These are nice because of the covering and because they are the proper jack for the analog meters from Triplett.

I know folks like the pins but a chunk of wire can better form to the connector to handle the massive power of some gear. But whatever you prefer that takes a banana should work well.

On the spring loaded outputs the pin only has a couple small contact patches, probably plenty for audio but nothing wrong with overkill, many using 12ga wire for short runs, completely unnecessary per the Roger Russell site. I'm in the group using big wire.

if you want bare wires instead of pins you could always just remove the banana plug and avoid adapters whether by disassembly and unsoldering or simply clipping it off totally avoiding adapters

i bought some cable ends that had braided flexible "pins" . the only problem with those are that they "flop" out of the jack and the top part of the housing is live so it must be shrink wrapped to avoid shorting against the chassis or the connector next to it. like these. they also fray after a few ins n outs. would not recommend these.

@painttoad you have hit on a device that has two things I hate. My opinion only!!

The pins, mentioned above. The yellow colored metal inside a clear plastic cap just so one can see the Chinese yellow metal on a connector I don't like. Grew up with top quality Pomona connectors used in industrial equipment from all the best companies and it works. Got a set of the clear shiny yellow metal things on a pair of insignias. Hole is nice and large but the edges will slice the wire when you tighten the connector. They aren't available in a dual banana configuration, probably because they are wide at the base. I just think they look cheap and sparkly to make guys think they look cool.

Just give me Pomona quality, I don't need the flash and I know they work. Just my opinion.
 
I like the things with braid but you are right the metal at the top needs shrink wrap. Who the heck designed those? Again the department of making shiny yellow metal appeal to the hobbyist. This is why I like the thing I recommended, use your own high performance wire of your choice, your choice of length and since the solder pot is large and the silicone shield fully covers the device it just works.

Instead of lopping off the banana which I could have used on the ads L1590/2 speakers, I used the jumpers to be able to connect the 100-pound speaker without having to get to the connections on the bottom.

i made these for testing my bro's 2230 after i went thru it. quite possibly the worst speaker connectors ever put on a receiver. i'd rather have screws and use crimp on lugs!

nope, that was the only reason. i personally do not like adapters for a permanent solution. if it were me, i'd cut off the plugs and terminate with something like this: although there are better choices that don't use set screws but rather a toothed compression type grip.

I agree with this especially when it comes to the 1/4" phone plug inputs to some amps, no adapters except when testing, use properly terminated cables.

I have a Citation amp with those stupid shove wire through the center of the screw in part and spread it out as you tighten this piece into the speaker output. Yamaha was also guilty of being stupid when selecting speaker connections on some their amps. I use a set of the female banana terminated jumpers for that amp, bedroom duty.

Main rig is fixed wiring but I use dual banana plugs at the speakers. All three main sets can use them.
 
I'd use Pomona female banana to wire per blue.

I too got the braided ends like @painttoad and didn't like them. You will need to heat shrink one end.

I had one of those cheap offshore jobs lose its peel completely.

Those offshore jobs also used extended tip grub screws. Using a large wire the threads would not catch in the plug. junk i say.

Stick with Pomona, quality products.

The female bananas were ebay sourced. Linked better in my first post about them. I need to check to see if Pomona offers a female banana. I guess they should some meters need em.
