Did I need another Dual?

Just bought and refurbed a 604 a couple months ago and love it! It's taken over as my number 1 (other is a great Elac 50H). Well an 80+ yr/old couple is moving and didn't want their stereo stuff. Noticed it listed a Dual 62Z table. Called on the table, mentioned there isn't a 62Z, they were really nice. Fingers crossed it was a typo and possibly a 622, he checked and said it was. No price, I offered more than it's worth used (dunno why, they were old and nice).

Got it home, haven't even looked at it. I tried it out at their house and it sounded and functioned as normal. I did notice it had the upgraded (when new) ULM 55e cart/stylus so that was nice. So did I need this? NO Will it replace my 604? Maybe. It's basically a 604 with full auto function, a different headshell, and an upgraded resonator counterweight.

Anyone else familiar with the Dual 622? Not a lot of info online about it, a couple people with fanatical, holy grail claims, but I take those with a grain of salt.

I just repaired a fellows 621, I think its almost the same not sure whats different.

Id check the power supply caps , the 47nf and the 1000uf . The 47nf cap spewed its guts . But otherwise its a nice table. Enjoyed it for the few days I had it.

Was the 621 fully auto? I think there are a total of 5 caps in this one, though only a couple are known for going bad. Easy enough to replace either way.

Though this one performed flawlessly, I'm looking forward to tearing into it. Now I have to research the differences between these 62X models. I owned really old Duals in the past, but these DDrives have me hooked.

That's actually pretty simple: The 622 was the ULMified successor of the 621 - with the lighter arm with 1st gen. proprietary ULM mount. So the 621 could be regarded as more desirable, due to being more universal in terms of cartridge choice - but otherwise the 622 isn't bad either.

Gotta agree with Manfred, the flexibility of the 1/2" mount and medium compliance arm is more attractive to me. I feel the ULM is rather limiting. Don't get me wrong. ULM is fine by itself and I purchased a 506-1 in 1981 and really enjoyed it.

I have a 604 (non-ULM table) in primary rotation with a Denon DL-110 and just love the combination. I refurb'd a 506 (1st gen ULM) a couple of years back and gave it away as a result. Of course the 6-series is up market from the 5-series, but that wasn't the reason. I just felt the 506 was somewhat locked in with the Ortofon cart. (Yeah, I know you can try to find 1/2" adapters, but for me that feels like a work-around.)

Again, the ULM's are nice if you want to stay with the Ortofon carts they come with. I was satisfied for years with the one I bought in 1981. Oh btw, you can still get stylus's for those Ortofon carts, so no worries if you want to focus on the ULM stuff.
