Did I pay too much for Large Advents?

I'm wondering if I paid too much for these. They are utility cabinet large advents. The back paperwork says "The Advent Loudspeaker" so i'm hoping they are 1969 models. They also are missing metal dome grilles on tweeters and have a metal mesh integrated into grilles. I know I might be fooling myself and hoping they are '69 models, but i'd like a second opinion. I paid 30+tax for them and approximately 20 for a new set of grilles which are somewhat different (no tweeter mesh, woofer cutout not perfectly round). Any advent experts out there? I'll have some pics shortly.

Long story short: Large Advent (Utility Cabinet) for $50. Too much?

Methinks a thread about 1969 Advents is misplaced in the "New Gear" Values forum. The Speakers forum hosts many threads about Advents.

If any single driver works and is in good shape, you are still in the black. Don't sweat it and get out the elbow grease for the cabinets.

For any of us to help identify them, best to post some pictures of the front baffles, front grilles (and showing those meshes you're speaking of) and the back of the speakers.

The ones with the perfect circles cutout for woofers are original. The others are original replacements.

Yeah, everything looks correct. Looks like they added the protective screen to the grille to reduce costs of having it made and put on the tweeter itsel. A little funny to see it sitting bare like that.

@ 50 bones you did well, the woofers are worth more than that. I have a pair and listen to them every day. They are the fronts in my surround sound.

So, what i'm trying to figure out is if that is factory done or not. I haven't seen tweeters exactly like those an any other pair on the net except one, and those were a bullnose pair.

You have a VERY early set. They started shipping the tweeters without the metal covers, then later added it to protect during shipping. The small 5th post near the tweeter was added a short time after initial runs. The rear panel should also be metal as they were later changed to Masonite.

I had a very early set of Walnut OLAs, however, the tweeters had both been replaced with much later Advent replacements. I attempted to find two of the non-grilled tweeters, but could only find one that I purchased from Cubby01. I ended up using a pair with the metal covers. No difference in sound, I was just hoping to make them period correct.

The ones that have tweeters without the glued on wire mesh are earlier than the ones with glued on mesh.

This would indicate very early production of your OLA. (or at least of the tweeter)

They look like the older ones, I still have grills saved from my old set and also (The Smaller Advent Speaker). I think I even saved the woofers also, been awhile since I thought about that stuff. Nice score for $50!

That's awesome. One of the biggest reasons I got these was for the history. Both tweeters are in near perfect condition. Also , mine do have the metal back panels. I didn't even notice that at first. Thanks. These were always going to have a permanent place in my collection. But i'll cherish them even more now. i might see what I can do about correct grills.
