Did I potentially do damage?

Hi there, long story short, I’ve got a Yamaha RS 202 and I’m using it with 70s midfi speakers (RTR EXP-12 8 ohm and an advent prodigy I 6 ohm, 4 ohm minimum).

the other day, I hooked up both. I played them a little loud, not pushing it too hard, about 80 on the amp volume. The amps apparently okay for 4 ohms, but with my speakers being wired in parallel (A+B), I guess that means the most the impedance could’ve dropped was to 2.6 ohms. I’m still not 100% understanding how amplifier clipping sounds, I didn’t play them for too long, and I was monitoring the heat of the amp. It never flipped into protection, and the 2 pairs actually sounded pretty darn good together.

i played the EXP-12’s today and they sound okay. I haven’t checked the advents yet as I put ‘em away (lack of room) but they were sounding okay before I put em away. I guess I’m just afraid that I caused some potential damage, maybe some clipping that I hadn’t noticed, or if the amp was damaging the speakers some other way? I’m a hypochondriac with this stuff, and I know for sure that the Yamaha RS 202 isn’t supposed to be brought down to 2.6 ohms (it sounded okay to my novice ears, I was using vinyl so I guess I’m afraid of mistaking speaker distortion for dust/scratches, and vice versa).

Anyway, if I didn’t do any damage (which I don’t think I did but still don’t know enough) does anyone know an amp that could drive both these speakers simultaneously safely? I haven’t had any luck finding hifi amps meant to go down to 2 ohms, I assume because they’re expensive.

If the amp sounds the same as it did before, you did no damage. The chance of long term damage that will show up years from now is quite small. If it did not damage the amp when presented with the load, damage probably won’t show up later.

However, avoid doing that in the future. The lower the impedance, the closer you will be to a short. And you don’t want to find out what that level is.

Distortion sounds bad. If it sounds bad, turn it down.

To drive the speakers safely, run them in series, or buy a power resistor and run it in series with the lowest impedance speaker.
 
Welcome aboard. .Your flirting with disaster.. If the amp didn't clip and go into protect. Your probably OK.
 
Yamaha M-60/65/80/ or 85 using speakers --- A & C or B & C
Was just looking on reverb and found an M60 that I was going to buy but had just been snagged. Shucks. Guess I’ll have to look elsewhere, and hook them up in series.

How would I hook them in series? If I’m using the 4 A terminals, (+/-|-/+), then on one bank of +/-, I’d hook the positive amp term to the positive on the RTR, then the negative RTR term to the positive of an advent, then the negative advent term back to the amp, then hook the other 2 speakers together the same way on the other channel/bank? Is that correct?
