Did Spotify affect my iTunes library

Hi there,

Long story short, I have a lot of lossless audio files in my iTunes library and I tried to sync Spotify with my iPhone thinking it would just get out of the files I had on my iPhone. Instead, it found files in my iTunes library and it started to sync them with Spotify.

Could this have downsampled any of the music in my iTunes library to lossy? And for that matter, could it have replaced any old masterings in my iTunes library with newer remasters from Spotify?

Or does it just copy the files before it syncs them?

Sorry. I just don't know how this whole process works. Maybe someone could help me out.

I can't find any specific information on their website, but Spotify should just link to the original iTunes file. There shouldn't be a separate copy, and it shouldn't be resampled. Either of those choices would represent really poor software design, and Spotify's developers seem more competent than that.

You can verify this pretty easily. Do a Spotlight search for the title of one of your tracks that was synced, and see how many copies of the file get listed. If there is only one, and it is in iTunes, then Spotify linked to the iTunes library instead of making a separate copy.

Then go to your iTunes library and do Get Info on the track. If it's still in Lossless, then it wasn't resampled.
 
Most such company`s just copy the files, if you have Flac or Hi-Rez files just make sure that they are copied in the same format. Hi-Rez or Flac music costs a premium if they have the ability to give you these type of files it`s going to cost you they will not upgrade to these formats for nothing.

I fixed the problem by replacing my old files with backup copies from another computer. So everything is all good now.
