Difference Between The PL-510 & 510A?

boreas

"If it sounds good, it IS good." E.K.E.
I just picked up a PL-510 over the weekend and have been looking for the specs on it. All I can find is the specs for the PL-510A. Except for the platter, the two models look absolutely the same as far as I can tell.

In an old thread here, Howard (hakaplan) mentioned that the specs on the PL-510A were slightly improved over the earlier PL-510 but he listed no specifics. Does anyone have any info on this or, better yet, can anyone direct me to the OM or SM for the PL-510?

Thanks,
John

Hey, Steve!

No, not yet. I need to decide whether it's worth spending $25.00 at eBay to find out. ;)

So far the only difference I've noted is the platter. The 510 has a platter with a flat outer edge upon which the strobe hash marks are silk screened. The 510A has a platter very similar to the PL-530 with the hash marks machined in as raised areas and the negative spaces painted black.

If, in addition, the platter is heavier on the A it might mean that it has a better and more powerful motor with better wow & flutter specs. :dunno:

This looks like being a pretty nice table, probably a "junior version" of the PL-550 with a nice Hall effect motor but no quartz PLL. I should have the new arm assembly here in the next couple of days. It left Illinois early this morning. When I get it operational I'll post some photos. Maybe I'll polish the dustcover while I'm waiting. :)

Hi, didn't we go through this before, it was some upgrade to the tt, not remembering what. Did not make any difference in the way it worked.:scratch2: Post a picture of the PL-510, I had two PL-510A's that were sold.

Hey, John -

I ran a Google search of AK and did find it said that the "A" version had improved specs over the earlier model but no specifics were offered. That may be what you remember.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the only visual difference between the two versions is the platter. That and the "A" after the "PL-510" on the model ID. Other than that the two models are identical in appearance.

Right now the table is without an arm. I got it with the arm tube snapped and have a new arm (from a PL-510A) on the way. It's the same as the arm I'm replacing. When I get it reassembled I'll post a photo or two.

So, what did you think of the A model? Did you like it as well as your PL-550?

John

As threatened, I've taken some pictures of this PL-510 now that the replacement arm is installed and the table is functioning. It works very well except for stiff, overdamped cuing and sounds quite good with an M91ED/EVG installed. As expected, the vinyl is a little chewed up but nothing serious. (Why did Pioneer use that stuff?!?!) I'll probably recover it, maybe in real wood.

I liked it a lot, once you get the suspension setup right it sounds great! The PL-550 is a totally different animal, solid feeling when using, very quiet! It is like it is not in the room!

That's my next project. Right now I think it's cranked down too tight. I'll get into that when I flip the table over to re-oil the cuing piston. Any suggestions or things you learned when setting yours up?

Looks good John.

I just took the motor out of a DUAL 1019 (DUAL base) and noticed that the Germans had also veneered the inside of the base! They even left some of the perforated veneer tape on one piece.

'Guess the Japanese were dedicated vinyl lovers.

Thanks, Steve! Sounds good too. I think it'll be a keeper when I get the suspension working.

Yeah, when you compare those Dual bases to the United Audio ones you have to wonder why Dual let them get away with using such crap. I think Noresco in Canada used their own bases too but they were much nicer.

Cheers!

I had to add washers the the suspension screws to loosen it up, give it more travel.
