Different Bose 901 generations

As far as I know series II had cloth surrounds. I've had a pair and indeed they were cloth.
I prefered the sound of the II over the III. But I recently heard a far newer pair and it might have been the placement but they they actually sounded quite good.

BillyThaKid, you have late Series III or early Series IV. If the rear grill has Velcro, then somebody has worked on them before. The rear grills on earlier 901s were stapled on. The grills on the later ones have repositionable glue, so the cloth grill is easy to remove and put back on.

All 901s came with front grills that are stapled. They are difficult to remove without damage.

Harmonkardon, I don't know quite as much as you think. I would guess that the way to tell if the surrounds are corroded is to play Telarc's classic CD of the 1812 Overture, at a normal comfortable volume, and see if one of the cannon shots bottoms out. Use a powerful amp so you know that any harsh sound is the fault of the surrounds, not the amp clipping. (That is how it works with a later, vented model.)

I picked up a pair of series 6 with an AudioSource EQ. The drivers are not Blue but look original. Any one know if they only came in blue or did some come in gray/black cones?

What model does it say, exactly, on the 901 nameplate/tag? Does is say anything about v2 or mkII?

The reason I ask is that the cones on my 901 VI are blue and the voice coil dust caps say Bose on them. But, I've seen pictures of what's been called 901 Series VI v2 or maybe Series VI mkII, and those pictures showed what appeared to be gray cones and the surrounds looked different too.

These are reported to be the 901 Series VI ver 2 speakers/drivers.

Far as EQ, making a big smiley face would be a lot better than no EQ, but won't be quite like the 901 curve.

The red trace is the response curve as measured from a 901 Series VI EQ. The blue trace is measured from a 901 Series II EQ.

I have a set of 901 series VI Mk2 and the cones do indeed look like your image. I traded in some series IV's that I bought cheap with bad foam. The refoaming wasn't very successful and I ended up with some drivers with voice coil rattle.
Not sure how long they made the Mk2.
