Diggin' my new AKG cans

purchased my AKG pair a few days ago to replace my sennheiser HD 555's that only lasted me 3 days before the left speaker went out. I like these a lot they sound better to me then the HD 555's and they are super light weight and comfortable. I don't like headphones that just rest on your ears and these go around your ears and cover them which is what I like. they are very detailed and I am hearing a lot of details I didn't hear before with any headphones. to me they just sound killer and I am very happy with my purchase.

Congrats! Those look like nice (and certainly comfortable) cans. :thmbsp:

As I said in the other thread, I'm not surprised they sound better than the Senn 555's. I know my AKG 702's laugh at my 595's which are similar to the 555's at least. (And I got the 702's for only $80 more than the 595's).

My 702's are also very detailed, the most detailed cans I've ever heard. They can't match my speakers (especially my Quads) for overall detail, but headphones have a way of bringing out the micro detail in a way speakers don't, just by being so close to your ears I think...you kind of concentrate on it more.

Happy listening! :music:

congrats! first time AKG owner myself. loving my k240 studio's i bought last night at my local guitar center. amazed how much improvement over my old senheiser 205-II that i payed 70 bucks for about year ago.

there especially amazing with female vocals and fit well with wide range of genres of music and has very well detailed soundstage, but they seem to require decent power even tho there only 55ohms. the detail in the soundstage and more weight and fullness in the overall sound.also has much more bass impact when amped by my sansui 5000x compared to hooking up through my sony walkman. hope you continue to enjoy your akg's.

I still havent hooked them up to a portable device yet but maybe I should see how they sound when hooked into my sandisk mp3 player but usually for portable devices I just use earphones because I am normally using the mp3 player at the gym hahah. I only have had the AKG's going straight through my 100 watt receiver and it powers them really well. :music:

Elitemav,

What did these run you approximately? And are they closed back designs?

I'm fortunate to be able to do some work remotely as of late, and if I'm in the coffee shop, I'd like a pair of closed-back designs to have so I'm not bugging other coffee shop patrons.

I love these cans they are all broken in and sound absolutely fantastic :music:

glad to hear! also Merry Christmas everyone here!

i love my akg's a lot too. stereo image is really good for a pair of headphones. still doesn't sound nice like real speaker's stereo image outside your head but it's as accurate in sound cue positioning.

i was thinking of buying the k-99's myself when i was at guitar center looking at headphones but the they only had 1 240's left and was only 10 bucks more.

was going to buy a pair of fostex t50rp too but they had none left and i was antsy and wanted a new pair now :P so i pulled the trigger on the akg 240's and never been happier.:music:

R_A: I also like my K240Ss very much - and yup, despite the medium low impedance, these still need a good bit of currect and voltage swing. A decent little portable headphone amp with low output impedance will already do the job just fine, though - at least in my experience.

Greetings from Munich!

P.S.: Guess I should add that the low output impedance isn't a requirement for general drivability, but rather a recommendation for best sound quality - 'cause to my ears the K240Ss sound a lot less good, when used on power-amp fed outputs with moderately high to high impedance. For the latter purpose I'd rather prefer the older K240Ms, even if these are less extended (both on the low and high side...).

my sansui receiver has 680ohm@1/2w outputs impedance resistor(for left and right) on the headphone jack output and to my ears my akg 240s sound really great and the high output don't effect'em at all and sound amazing.

i assume my amp output cuts the voltage and current lower the impedance it gets fed. not sure how much voltage it can feed through 680ohms. just know the wattage output for 680ohms for both left and right channel.

I saw a deal right before Christmas on some AKG-K430's for $29.99 so I grabbed some and then saw that Amazon and others were selling these for $85-$115 bucks, so I was pumped. I gotta say I'm surprised how well they perform, very lightweight and comfortable and with a nice open sound with plenty of bass, high end, its all there. I like them alot!!!!

Congrats. I own a pair of K240S and also K66.

Both the K66 and K99 have been around for a while now. I really love the looks of yours. My K66 have been going strong for years and sound WAY better than any set ever should at this level. They are much more forgiving than my K240S, and have a place in my listening.

Enjoy and welcome to the club!!

Big fan. The 702s get slogged a little bit as not truly first rate, and maybe they're not, but they're my favorite HP. And for portables, the K420s.

yeah it seems like AKG's sound better than a lot of headphones costing a lot more. my k99's sound far better to me than my brothers Bose cans costing almost twice as much. I almost bought the 240's but they were all out and back ordered for a long time and only had a display model that wasnt for sale. great sounding cans for sure just didn't know when they would get a new batch in and the k99's to me were more comfortable and sounded awesome. couldn't be happier with them thats for sure.

As I said about the K66, the K99 will be far more forgiving than the K240S. The 240's are very revealing cans and as a result, "junk in, junk out".

I find it difficult to listen to anything other than the best of source/source material with the 240's. For everything else I use my K66's.

We must remember that many of these models were designed for studio work which calls for 100% transparency and neutrality. The K240S fit that mold of "working" cans.
