Disappointments!

G'day all, I guess this isn't really new territory for me, but today I encountered a couple of significant 'disappointments' (one of which is detailed in the turntables forum), and I've been amazed by how 'flat' and even a little depressed I feel as a result.

It doesn't take much for that to happen with me. Am I the only one who reacts that way to 'disappointments? Regards, Felix aka catman.

Hi Felix, I think that would be a standard human emotion.
I haven't read your thread in the turnatble forum as yet but that may give me some more insight into the reasons.
If it's in the turntable forum I'll give you an experience that I had yesterday which has left me really P****d of with myself.
I went into a local cash converters and spotted a beautiful 70's JVC turntable, direct drive and heavy timber plinth $50:banana: and in superb condition:banana:.
I looked along a bit and spotted a small Luxman integrated amplifier $50:banana: I moved down to it to have a look and a guy swooped on the turntable.:tears:

He took the turntable to the desk and got the attendant to get some speakers to check it.
I sort of hung around watching him and willing him to not buy it.
Then to rub salt in the wound a young girl asked if she could help me, I told her I was waiting to see if the other guy was going to buy the turntable.
She handed me a flyer and they were having a sale 25% off everything:tears::tears: I would have got it for $38.
I thought I'd cut my losses and buy the Luxman amplifier instead.

It was gone to:tears::tears::tears::tears:

I'm having sleepless night but I know that the dissapointment will diminish with time.:tears:
But for the time being I think I'll just keep kicking myself.

All the best mate and just let time take it's course :thmbsp:

G'day mate, yes your story would definitely be a major disappointment. Actually my story has worked out better than expected in a way.

The problem turned out to be an unexpected 'ground loop' on the left channel caused by the supplied mounting nuts that were slightly larger than the usual mounting cartridge mounting nuts, and were just contacting the metal shell of the cartridge body causing a hum (ground) loop.

Thankfully I had a couple of tiny insulating washers in my turntable accessories 'bits' box, and that thankfully stopped the ground loop!

That wasn't quite the end of the story though as the stylus has a definite 'problem' too, but I might be able to overcome that too, maybe!

Ok then, one problem ok, another one or two to solve. As the man says, 'two out of three ain't bad'. :D Regards, Felix aka catman.

i had read your other thread catman glad to hear you figured the cart issue out! as thomo57 said i think most of us that are passionate about audio get frustrated at times, recently mine was my marantz receiver that's been back to the repair shop three times now and still has issues!

I just had a similar experience to that of thomo57, although I wasn't there to see the other purchaser(s).
I don't usually go out at lunch, but needed to do some banking yesterday, so ventured out into the traffic and midday mayhem. Sharing the parking lot of the bank is a Salvation Army store. So I ventured in to see what scores may await. The vinyl did not look too promising, then I spotted a couple pairs of speakers sitting at the ends of consecutive shelves near the LPs. The first pair were Polk model 7. Grills were a little warped, but drivers all looked intact. Wasn't sure which version they were or what the caveats were on this model. The other pair were Marantz Imperial 7, woofers looked good, but mids needed foam. Again, not sure what the consensus was on that model, but knew I had read about it on AK. Both were marked $29.99/pair.I had no way of testing either pair in store that I could see, either.
When I got back to work I did a little digging and decided to go back for the Polks. As you may have guessed, both pair were gone.:tears: Some things are just not meant to be.:nono:
I didn't walk in there looking for speakers and if you ask Mrs. 313, there are clearly enough around here. I guess that is some consolation.:scratch2:
Not the first or biggest score I missed out on, but it is the freshest...
