Dish Network vs. DirecTV

We've been a Dish customer since '97. A few glitches here and there nothing to complain about.
I bought the college basketball package one year and didn't renew it the next year. A few months passed
and Dish was charging me for it. I threatened to pull the plug on the pseudo English speaking people and they eventually
repaid me. A few years back, I up graded to HD receiver and bought (and own) the lowest equipment. Dish tried to convince me to
rent a box so that I could store TV shows/movies. I said no because I really don't care if I miss a show/movie.
Current bill is 85 bucks and change. I'm not a loyal customer by any means because when a comparable HD streaming
package comes along, I'm calling the bank and getting a new debit card so dish won't try playing their games.

I've had the DirecTV about 5 months now, and am very happy with it. You have to have internet service through a separate provider, but the combined price of the DirecTV and internet services is still about $100 a month less than what the new cable/internet bill was going to be after new Spectrum rate increases. And my wife and I already hated TimeWarner -- now Spectrum -- so that was a win-win.

There are not quite as many channels with the package we chose, but I mostly watch the same handful of channels all the time anyway, so that's not an issue. By far the best part of it is the free DVR service set up for every TV in the home, which I didn't have with cable at all. It's just great -- of course, I didn't have any DVR at all before, but I'm sure it wouldn't have been free with TimeWarner. I don't miss the cable one bit.

The only downside might be, as others have said, that bad weather can cause temporary service loss. Occasionally I have to restart the receiver or the internet, but not nearly as often as I had to do with the stupid cable boxes, which was several times a week, sometimes several times in one day. The one time there was problem with the dish, the guy came promptly and replaced a part free of charge, but that may be because the dish installation was less than 90 days previously. It helps if you're willing to try to troubleshoot things yourself, which I've been able to do a couple of times with online assistance.
