I have never used an ME but your procedure sounds correct. I do have one just never used it. The stylus brush I have seems to do the trick.

What ever works.

I'll give it a shot, couldn't hurt at this point

When's the last time you cleaned the stylus?

I haven't changed it since I got it a few years ago. I'd say that I use my player about 1-2 times a week for about 4/5 hours at a time. I'm not sure if that's a lot but it seems like it to me I guess.

If the build up has hardened it helps to use something to help loosen it up a bit, like alcohol or if you have some finger nail remover on the tip of your brush work it from the rear of the cartridge to the front quite a number of times

Not a good idea.

"Never use any kind of liquid on the stylus tip" That was told to me by someone that does retipping. You never know if what you are using will loosen the cement holding the diamond tip. I have heard some stories of the tip coming off unexpectedly.

I heard with the ME to cut a small section and slowly lower the arm down onto it and that's it.

That's the correct procedure. Dip the stylus onto the ME several times, then check if it's clean. Repeat as necessary. I use ME to clean the stylus after playing each side of the record.

This took rubbing back AND forth with a Q-tip and alcohol, on two separate attempts, before a black spot came off on the Q-tip. I had assumed the stylus to be broken off, even after looking at the before picture. I wouldn't want to try rubbing alcohol on a thousand-dollar cartridge though, especially if the manufacturer warns not to. OTOH, for a thousand-dollar suit, I don't want rice-thread, either.

Mine looks like the first picture. Maybe the Magic eraser will help

No more than the stories I have heard of the ME snagging the tip and pulling it off, or accidentally damaging the tip while using ME.
