DIY Harman Kardon power button replacement

Mr.San-Man

Just gettin' better
I've been aggravated by a missing power button on my HK-930 for quite some time now but was too cheap to pony up $20 for a complete switch. All I needed was the little clear red button.
So I have been keeping my eyes peeled for something to fashion a power button out of.
Recently while Christmas shopping at Hobby Lobby I spotted these.

The color appeared to be about right and they were crystal clear.

The large brush appeared to be close to the correct diameter so I removed the brush head and rubber collar leaving just the shaft.

Then I guesstimated the overall length of the original to be about 3/4 of an inch long and trimmed it down in a vise with a fine toothed hacksaw. I wrapped it in a rag as to not mar the finish.

The face of the trimmed plastic was kind of rough so I polished it with some metal polish I had kicking around.

Next I cut a groove in the center of the end which slides onto the post of the power switch. I used the hacksaw again for this but the groove was a little too tight so I had to take a drill bit and carefully enlarge the groove.

Good Work!!

Outstanding DIY fix. It's amazing what one can do with a little time and ingenuity. Looks very nice to boot!:thmbsp: What tear is the Camaro in your avatar? Is it a '70? Love the split bumper cars. Very nice.

I had a '72 also way back when. It wasn't the split bumper, but was a 350 4 speed and a lot of fun to drive. Wish I still had it! Spent a lot of time and money on her just to lose it in a divorce settlement. Good luck with yours and many happy miles.

I know this is an old post and sorry to revive it but I am also missing the red button on my HK 330A and can’t, for the life of me, find a replacement online. Do you make these and willing to sell or can anyone point me somewhere I can get a replacement? Been looking for ever with no luck. Close I’ve seen that might work is a Pioneer SX9000 black power button... if there are alternatives out there that I should look for I don’t 100% need a red button.

thanks guys/girls!

I have the same issue with My Harman kardon A-401. have been trying for weeks to figure out what will work to replace the broken red push button switch. still haven't found anything to replace it yet.. One of those octagon shaped clear big pens seemed to work ok for function but destroyed it trying to cut it down to correct size.
