DIY single driver kit for the woodworking impaired?

I have a hankering to build a pair of single driver speakers. BUT, I have just about zero woodworking skills.

@botrytis had a pair of these at AKFest last year. Here is his thread. They simply require assembly.

Here's another ready to assemble kit, but it requires clamps I don't have and looks a little "unfinished" to me:

Anyone have any other easy to assemble kit suggestions?

I kind of like the first one. Reminds me of Swedish furniture in a box. :D looks a lot easier to put together. No need for a collection of various size clamps.

Planet 10 HiFi I am on my second pair. I just finished a pair of mMar-Ken6p, bookshelves. They use an Alpair 6p. Not too hard but not easy either. Need clamps, need to finish them too, but come with everything but glue. They really sound great!

I was in the same situation you are in about six months ago. I said to hell with it and bought some Horn Shoppe Horns. They are so good that they are now my main speakers. The Tang Band kit is nice, but you'll have $400 in it before you even put it together.

Those sounded excellent.

After doing some reading, it seems many of these single driver speakers need to be near the corners to the room to reinforce the bass. That is a problem in my man cave.

@MWalt - the Tangband project speakers are $500 delivered to my house in PA, the Horn Shoppe Horns appear to be $950 not delivered if I read correctly. That is a pretty substantial pricing difference just to give a single driver speaker a try. Just sayin...........

How about the Frugal horn? It gets all sorts of great reviews, box is attractive and can be had in a flat pack. Inexpensive, as are the drivers.

Ya Planet-10 has some nice stuff for good prices.

You know I saw a nice little floor stander with 3" drivers that the builder said cost him about $75-80.00. Did not have a lot of SPL but sounded nice for moderate volume, and really surprising bass. I'll dig up the link. Been thinking about a pair for myself, as if I need more! Oh and there's also TABAQ that use 3" drivers. Neither are kits but do not need a boatload of woodworking skills either.

No woodworking tools or skills needed for these. I'll happily give you the recipe. They got great reviews at AK Fest '09. Not the last word in bass, but more than you'd expect.

The Horn Shoppe speakers are $950.00+/pair, plus freight. It is an already assembled speaker, so freight is very expensive. $400.00 for the D4-1 kit, freight is much lower, maybe $100.00 worth of accessories, so $500.00 + freight. Lot less expensive, and a fun project.

Is that toilet paper stuck in the lower radius of the left speaker? I will assume that in the right one also. Since that is PVC DWV-40 fittings, I certainly hope that it is not toilet paper stuck from the last flush...:D Is that 4" diameter?

Never thought about the toilet paper angle. Hmmm...

It's actually polyfill quilt batting. When I built a taller set of these I had issues with getting the stuffing to stay put. I found that I could take a sheet of the batting and roll it up and it worked fairly well and stayed where I put it as long as there was something at the bottom end to keep it from creeping. In the case of the little guys that was the lower curve.

It is 3" pipe and fittings with a 3" Tang Band driver. The driver is mounted to a flat cap. Total for that pair was probably around $60. At the fest someone dubbed them the "Sewer Lines" and it stuck.

Cool looking speakers (alien wooer!)
Who do they sell to ? Ultra rich elite shoppers

Here's another option: http://brinesacoustics.com/Pages/M10-A10/Main.html

Bob sells flats for $395, including shipping.

The drivers (MarkAudio Alpair 10.2) are $110 each at Madisound and are some of the best sounding fullrangers available at that price point (too bad the sale is over, they were $80 each just a few days back).

So, for a little over $600 you would have a pair of incredible fullrangers that are easy to build.

I just checked Horn Shoppe's site. http://www.thehornshoppe.com/ Now $925 shipped. Still that's $50 more than I paid not even 6 months ago. The tang band's look like a lot of fun too. Either way, you are always welcome to stop by for an audition. You don't live that far away and I am that impressed with the Horns. And, bring your favorite, most esoteric standmounts with you for comparison. I'll supply the Yeungling. :D
