DIY speaker cabinets

I just bought a pair of Goodmans Midax and Trebax speakers with crossovers. I am waiting for the bidding to end on a pair of Goodmans Audiom 15 inch woofers. My question is what kind of speaker boxes should I build for these? I have two speaker boxes from a late 50's Magnavox stereo phono that have dimentions of 26 inches height 20 inches width and 14 inches length. The wood is about 1/2 inches thick. If those cabinets will work I will build new boxes to those exact dimentions for the drivers to be mounted in. I may not use grille cloths and instead finish the wood.

I suspect that you will need very large speakers. Very very large. There are probably people here with experience with these Goodman's speakers that can provide details. Figure on something the size of a small fridge and you'll probably be safe.

I'm sure Markus in MA has some open baffle suggestion for these drivers, as well.

Unfortunately I was outbid on the woofers and have no more cash to throw at them. The project is shelved until I find another pair of Goodmans woofers unless a fellow AKer wants to buy them and give them to me as a Christmas present .

runs along lines of my project

I am working on a similar project with JBL 2226 15" drivers and Dayton horns w/Silenium drivers. There is a recomended box dimension on the PE site on the page that describes the 2226 JBL (I think its called project ideas). Not sure if my box will be those exact dimensions but will likely keep the internal volume the same. Likely extend the height to enclose the horn above a horizontal baffle which will support a brace holding up the back end of the horn/driver combo. I normally use 3/4" ply for smaller projects but with these panel size so large I likely will either double up (sandwitch) or try to find thicker material. I used 1" MDF on a subwoofer project once but found it was hard on the tungsten blade on my table saw due to its dense nature. I will likely also go for some internal bracing and acoustimat insulation to keep resonance down. The sugested project has a very thick front baffle to support the driver weight. Also I like to glue 1" x 1" square harwood along the inner seams to beef up the joint. If I lap two pieces of 3/4" ply together, the outer panels may be slightly shorter than the inners to leave room along the edges to lay in a 1"x1" hardwood on the outsie of the cabinet as I hate the exposed ends of the plywood. Likely will do the same around the front edges with 3/4" x 1/2" hardwood. Also have two 4" x 4" long vents ordered along with some Dayton ProAudio 1600 hz crossovers. HEY ! my ears were ringing

never used (or heard) the Wharfdales in question, but if they're like most 50's/60's woofers, they'd probably sound real good on OB's . . . it'd be pretty wild to mount 'em on JE Labs OB's, with the mid and tweeter horn mounted just above the woofer . . .

that being said, I'd also be REALLY cool to mimic a Goodmans 'factory' design . .. I'm sure if you dig around you'll find a recommended enclosure volume. My guess is it'll be well above 5 cubic feet of box :yes: they'd probably work in the old ev or jensen corner cabinets . . .
