DIY speakers

Hi Tube Radio,

The VAS is not the recommended cabinet size. It's one of the specs that helps determine the required cabinet size. If you are planning on a scratch build, I would recommend another woofer other than that pioneer. It would be extremely marginal at best.

Also, keep in mind that the dimensions you are using would have to be internal dimensions, otherwise you end up losing a couple of cubic feet because of the thickness of the boards.

I guess I would have a couple of questions.

First, what is your budget for the upgrade?

Second, what are your goals? 20hz bass sounds like it's important to you, but I'm not sure it's a realistic goal from your mains if budget is in fact a concern.

Last, how much room do you have?

I see that your last post mentions that you'd be accounting for inside dimensions. However, a new concern has arisen, 1/2" plywood is not suitable for any enclosure with more than a 4-5" midrange, you'll want thicker material.

If I do build the boxes then the speakers will remain a three way design as they are now. Should I use 1 inch wood then? Therein lies the problem. Space and money. I couls always build boxes with the Magnavox woofers since they seem to be the only ones that can go down real low in a smaller space. Would it be possible to use a car audio subwoofer and run it off the 4 ohm tap on the Scott with a choke in series with the woofer and run the rest of the speakers off the 8ohm tap with a capacitor in series with the 12 inch speakers or would that cause unforseen problems? I'm planning for the future in case those Magnavox speakers bite the dust. I could always find another pair ogf those Magnavox speakers to use as spares.

It's all in the planning stages right now. Something I may build in the near future. I'm trying for a more professional look versus just an old speaker box with the mid and tweeter sitting on top of a gray carpeted subwoofer enclosure. I know those Magnavox woofers have life left in them, but they won't last forever. I assume they are at least 30 years old now? This is all relatively new to me.

I am impressed by the new midrange drivers. They blend in better with the other two speakers then the Selenium compression drivers did. Even vocals are more clear and defined as well as acoustic guitar. I may pull out my Henry Mancini record and my Paul Mauriat record to test the new drivers with. I'll edit this post with the rssults once the test is finished.

Edit: I just finished listening to Black Snow and The Sons Of Italy by Henry Mancini. Those songs never sounded better and I think that I heard some stuff in the music that I've never heard before.

I have another question. How will this http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=296-546 affect the speakers. I will get a couple provided they are ok to use. Will they also work for a couple of car audio subwiifer boxes that are exactly the same as the boxes I have for the Magnavox 12 inch speakers? I would also like to know of a good source to get a couple 15 inch 8 ohm speakers (4 ohm DVC will also work) that go down to 20 Hz as I'm lookung to take the low frequency load off the Magnavox speakers if at all possible. With the addition of the new compression drivers I realize that the Magnavox speakers are lacking somewhat. I know that I can easily add a powered subwoofer, but I want to stay away from that if at all possible unless it's the only way to go. I'm going to see if I can build a 12 DB crossover for these speakers without going through too much trouble.
