You can use point-to-point wiring or a breadboard (or turret board). You don't really need a circuit board (PCB).

My DIY 5F1 Champ kit. I followed Rob Robinette's page.

The 5F1 uses a 12AX7 in the front end.

The 5F1 is pretty simple to build using just the schematic. I used a piece of eyelet board I had on hand. It's even easier since the layout drawing is easy to find for download.
Looking over that '48 Special amp it looks like it would be easy to add a simple treble tone control connected to the volume control of the 5F1 as well if you wanted.

It should be noted that many people dislike the tone stack and tone control on these small, old-school SE amps. That added circuit seemed to really scoop out the midrange, so the amp has this funky, flat sound that robs the 6V6GT of some of its rich overdrive harmonics.

People were actually disappointed with the AA764 Blackface Champ and removed the tone stack and tone control. It was a common "fix" in those days. Also, go from the 2700-ohm global feedback back to the 22k-ohm one. Basically, make the thing sound like a classic tweed.
