DLK 4 crossover help!

Hi, I have a pair of DLK4 speakers, and lately they've been sounding kind of muddy. I'm guessing that the crossovers need to be replaced.

Does anyone have any experience with how to do this in these speakers?

I'll attach a pic, but it looks like the assembly is built on a block of wood and glued to the cabinet. It's there a way to test the capacitors?

Hmmm, that's going to be a bit tricky I believe. The capacitors are likely buried inside the wax in those two tubes and that bigger rectangular tub.

I think your best bet would be doing some digging online and/or physically into the crossovers, to determine the values (or likely values) and building something with new capacitors that you could test against the current piece.

It likely isn't going to be too easy but from what I've read of those 4's, they were very good performers when designed.

There may be some information on warming up that wax in order to scoop/poor it off the old capacitors, some other manufactures used this method in the past as well, JBL for example.

Hi I just got your pm an responded the crossover on these 4’s are Extremely durable. Don was thee master of the crossover design the 4’s were all designed an handmade by him to be overbuilt very heavy duty Computer grade Sand filled mylar type The best available at the time. I’ve never seen a failure with caps on these dlk 4’s. Joe n Theo over at Midwest will tell you the same-thing. Most all problems with these 4’s are with the 4 pods/pads adjusters for mids n tweeters,there needs to be a consistent good electrical connection with those pods They are wired right in the X over with all of the drivers and can affect the sound when dirty or not working properly and you can’t judge the quality of a pod based on it turns freely and there’s no static they can an do drop a dB or 2 on In value and volume their hitting the most critical mid range areas so I suggest you clean those parts or replace them if not up to spec. Also checked insulation to having batting and if it still sounding muddy it’s most likely i a driver issue.hope this helps
