Dnewma04's speakers

Last weekend, I picked up some speakers for AK member dnewma04 (Dave Newman). Hooked them up this morning, and they sound pretty good - a really fine job with Shirley Horn's voice, nice and smooth, less high-end than most newer speakers. Not much deep bass, but as the pics show, my room doesn't really allow for an optimal setup. They came with an HK tube amp ("Trio") and stereo tube tuner ("Duet") as shown.

Those are some very well preserved gems for sure.

I really like those cabinets, and it looks like they hold many possibilities(read room) for mods/upgrades.

Just out of curiosity, is that a discernable date/manu code on the rim of that driver? I'm thinking GE probably outsourced their speakers.

Thanks for the pics and review, Rich! They look much better than I was expecting and your review is a pleasant surprise to say the least.

Can't wait to figure out how the hell to get them...lol

Good question - I can't make it out in the picture, but I'm not really enthused about removing all two dozen (!) screws to take the back off again ... may get around to it, but not today :)

LOL, i don't blame ya RichPA, maybe Dnewma04 will share with us.

Hopefully like all good stewards of this hobby he'll do thorough internal inspections of everything once he gets it home.

Are those wood cases on the tuner and amp HK factory or something custom? I'm really diggin em.

They're actually in a small console, with a turntable in a pull-out drawer below - looks custom to me.

As I listen more to these speakers, I continue to be impressed - bass seemed to improve over the 1st hour, and with a little moving around they seem to be imaging pretty well. I don't have much experience with vintage speakers, but I can see why some folks like these older coaxials.

Ahhhhhhh, i think the brightness is down on the mancave monitor, i see now exactly what you mean, until i saw it on a different monitor i thought it was 2 seperate wooden cabinets.

The quality of the speaker boxes combined with that console have me thinking "Cabinart" or some hifi furniture maker like that.

Thats a very nice vintage system, it's great when a new score starts out looking fantastic with the potential of sounding even better.:thmbsp:

Dave,

Nice setup Rich picked up for you there.

And nice tube gear too!

Rich, I spy Thiels hiding behind 'em... Which model are they?

Not Thiels, Paul, but Audio Concepts (ACI) Sapphire IIILe's - had 'em at the Fest, so a number of folks here have heard them. Somewhat similar in concept to Thiels, with the slanted panels and first-order crossovers.
