Do ALL speaker enclosures benefit from damping material? I’m wondering if these enclosures need it…

I think it is simply a bass reflex that has been put in the corner to improve the low end (because it operates into an eigth of a hemisphere, not because of the type of enclosure). If just sticking a speaker in a corner makes it a horn, then all speakers are potentially horns, which isn't exactly a helpful definition.

I thought they looked similar to these initially:View attachment 2333228
I’ve done a little research so far and I have found that there were some 3 way systems made using the crossover, super 3’s, super 8’s and w15’s. I have the 15” woofs, and the super 3’s, now just waiting on some wharfie 8’s from drbiggles and I’ll be ready to install everything and give it a listen

Listen and keep the woofer that you prefer ..
If it's a home brew, someone may have already put that modern woofer in on purpose ..
Fly it with whichever you prefer ..you said that you were liking how they sound now ..

And you're definitely on with trying both .. you may gain clarity in the mid-bass and lower midrange with the older, likely stiffer driver ..

Yes ... and it's all a matter of definitions .. which completely overlap ..
At least when it comes to horn loading, slots, and bass reflex ..

And it could be argued that cone drivers are partial horns, and yes most speakers in a corner are are "horn loaded" by the shape of the room ...
It's all in whats happening to the wave reflections .. and as you state "in the definitions"..

And sorry to the OP for sliding sideways into definitions ..
It's how it sounds that counts ..

I found them, early gold magnet alnicos, 1961. Both dcr to 5.9ohms. But one is suspect, I’ll test it with a source today.

These have no damping material whatsoever and I am considering putting some inside the bass enclosure at the very least but since they appear that they never had any type of damping material inside I’m wondering whether that’s the way this particular enclosure was intended to be used, without damping.
Wether or not damping material will help depends of the frequencies the driver is reproducing, how long the wavelengths are, shape/size of the enclosure.

The higher the frequencies, the shorter the wavelengths, the bigger the enclosure, the more beneficial the damping material will be.

Don’t thank me too fast. Suspect driver has the rattles. Why? I cannot say, everything else about it is fine. Iam sorry, I was sure we were good. 8” Wharfedale mids should be easy and affordable, and worth it.

It’s all good Doc. I’ll keep an eye out for a pair. I just discovered that my super 3’s need new foam and I had been playing them that way for a few hours. Going to address the tweets and woofs and watch out for some super 8’s that don’t need too much, if any, work. This project is turning out to be pretty time consuming o_O fun nonetheless

Any project done right is time consuming. From here, this one looks to be worth it. I can hardly wait to watch it unfold.
