Cool, see if they have this one too, since you asked earlier.

I surrender...there are very special people with extraordinary senses that are beyond us mere mortals....Yes every amp producing 20 watts of power and not clipping will sound completely different

In actual use, the load is of a complex dynamic inter-reactive nature, that may also "hear" and is affected by the sound in the room, moreso at higher levels. How the amp(s) react to all this directly, as a load, and dealing with the room signal in the feedback loop should definitely be considered. It has been an axiom with some listeners that altering the degree of feedback affects more than just sound of bass performance for instance.

Measurements?
Rta acoustic waterfall, fft analysis' of the system portions, to include calibrated mic input, ect, on test signals and music.
Bench tests into a standard load might provide baseline measurements that could be wrapped into dynamic testing results on music in listening conditions as outlined.

Whatever Bruhl, I see just about every thread you have been part of is controversial. Not expecting anything different here.

my previous post was about preaching to the choir

this one is about overthinking the responses.

In complete defense of those who believe all SS amps (maybe all amps - you know tubes) sound alike.

I know of several cases that prove this.

1. listening to rock at 150dbs (front row center at say a Grateful Dead concert) is identical to listening
to death metal at 150dbs at home using any SS amp like Crowns, SAEs, customs,... immediate
deafness and permanent tinnitus with lowering upper frequency sensitivity does mean all music,
amps, speakers, sound alike. in fact, standing on runway during 747 takeoffs are also included

2. take people who have never heard rock and play it loud but not at 150dbs. it will sound alike.

3. take rock lovers, put them in front of a Chinese opera, not just any Chinese opera, but Cantonese
opera. and play it through electronic amps (SS and/or tube) at any level. again it will sound alike.

4. take deaf, near-deaf, tone-death (exclude musicians with perfect pitch) and play high or low
levels of music through a 60 YO table or clock or kitchen or background radios. Yes they will
sound the same.

I love deniers - I would never have them anywhere other than where they are. they are the doppelgangers,
the other twin (evil/good), the counterfactual supporters, those who report specious arguments,
audiopiles, and I salute you.

prove to me you are serious - DUMP all those TOTL, amps, preamps, receivers, cassette decks,
R2R, speakers (especially LS3/5As) here on AK.

Flippers, audiophiles, aficionados, will all celebrate. you will singlehandedly start a revolution:

all cars are alike, all watches are alike, all food is alike, and your salaries are the same as
those at Goldman Sachs.

7 pages in and not a single display of scientific method. Those who are passionate about your position being the correct one - you simply need to state your case more emphatically, rally more to your side, and belittle those whose opinion differs from yours.

The very idea that one could listen to a particular amplifier, swap it for another, recall exactly what the prior amplifier sounded like, and then compare the new sound to the old is flawed on so many levels. Of course, we could identify things we like or dislike about the way a given amplifier sounds but our psyche is skewed by things like deviations in amplitude, design, cosmetic appeal, heft, glitz, brand name, etc. The rubber meets the road only when such variables are removed.

Like I said earlier, this is definitely an area where ignorance is bliss for most - and understandably so. The overall premise is a pretty simple hypothesis for each of us to prove/disprove in our own space.

Again, my answer is NO.

By the way... the survey up there is posted on the world wide web. As of June 2018, 55.1% of the world's population has internet access. 3.4 billion people (more or less) are able to see this survey.

99 Responses.

And we are all worked up. LOL.

@ scientific types, that can't hear hear, or believe, there could be a difference in the sound of different amp designs.
I take a modicum of empathetic offense, purely in support of the worthy characters of people like Pass, Levinson, Stuart Taylor (Bryston), D'Agostino, the designers at Krell, AR, and a whack of others. (Again ... offence for them, not me). These engineers have been making improvements to their designs, where the original sold for say, 15k, and the new one sells for 18 or 20k. and the redesign, 10 years years on, sells for 30k. (or 300k). While all along, the amplifiers all just sounded the same, anyway.
Are these well-respected people, all just marketing con-men? That's a pretty big statement to make, but that's really what you're suggesting.
Just a thought.

Apart from that, I presume I have reading problems too, as I see people consider "the same" equals "alike".
Maybe because of English being a "foreign language" to me this could be the case, as apparently I do not realize the extent of equality of the words.

I overlooked OP's statement at the beginning of the poll about the same amplifiers sound different because of electronics components tolerances alone, and did not realize this apparently is a cutting edge / golden ears contest.

I have a word for you....monotone, sound without high or lower pitch. Like when a person can only hear the middle of the sound range and insists that all amps sound the same......guess what ??

Hook an MX-1000 into a Dynaco tube preamp with two pair of JBL-L250’s and if it has no difference in sound from what the person is use to....guess what ???

Then if something just has to sound the same......that’s psychosomatic !!!!

I’m an older person and I use a good EQ to emphasize certain frequencies because I can’t hear as well as I used to when I was younger.....then I use a pair of huge monitors that are sensitive at 105db. I also use sound canceling headphones so I can hear more of the music. If I didn’t use an EQ, have a receiver with severely low distortion and very sensitive speakers.....I would think that all amps pretty much sound the same also.

It’s not a Golden Ears contest, it’s about figuring out a way to enjoy the most you possibly can and learning different ways to enjoy more. There is no perfect way to continually do something because we change with age.

That’s why people that think EQ’s are of no possible use don’t understand....
