Do I really need floorstsnders?

If your thinking of getting the Jamos understand they're rear ported and will need some breathing space behind. Plus if you want that 3D holographic imaging I was referring to they will need some space around them.

Damn, my space doesn't really allow for that sort of thing... so I might have to compromise a bit and pull the cabinets (record cabinets) that these things will go on away from the wall a bit. That's one thing that I like about my Elacs, that they have a front facing port and are designed to sound good against a wall. I'm sure these Jamo speakers will sound good a bit closer to a wall than is ideal, but admittedly less great than what they're capable of. I don't have a giant house, much less a dedicated listening room so I have to deal with what I've got. I did once have a friend who's much more of an audiophile than myself tell me (some years ago when my gear wasn't as nice) that he thought that my system sounded better than it had a right to and that my room acoustics must be doing something good for it.

I tried LS50s in a 16x20 space with dual 12” DIY sealed subs that were -3db @ 25 Hz...

...and the room swallowed them up. They just couldn’t produce mid/upper bass, mids or highs that engaged me with any sense of authority, realism or scale compared to bigger speakers with subs...and I tried them with some big muscle SS amplification (Threshold) and some healthy tube power. The only stand mounts I experienced that could deliver something exciting and authoritative were Energy Veritas 2.2...

...but to truly grip the room and load it with sonic energy that gave a true sense of lifelike scale and dynamics, I found speakers that had a lot of driver surface area or horn loading (or a combination of the two) did the best job.

And all of those speakers were supplemented with the dual subs with no filtering out of the low frequencies to the mains.
I haven’t heard your Monitor Audios, but figure they’d be close to my ADS 1290/II’s in terms of sonic energy produced. So unless you intend to listen in a near field configuration or move your system to a smaller room, I suggest you stick with floorstanders in a room with as much volume as the one you’re currently using.

I have the JBL 590’s, and they can create some impressively large sound stage scale in my 16x30-something living room. Not sure if the 530’s could do the same, but they do use the same compression driver and similar biradial horn as the 590, so if supplemented with a pair of capable subs they could probably compare similarly to their big brother. More so than the LS50’s, I’d wager.

I wonder if some big NHT's might fit the bill. An old roommate had some and they sounded great. Jus don't know if they would have enough sound for such a big space like that.

And of course there are the JSE Infinite Slope speakers. Just read a thread on them. From what I have read they sound great.
