Do the series 6 BOSE 901s work well with the BOSE 550 receiver?

Hi I’ve only heard of people using series 3 and 4 901s with this receiver. I imagine the only difference between the series is the equaliser settings. Also is this a good package to listen too. I’ve got the opportunity to buy one and have no equaliser with the 901s I saved from the scrap heap a few years ago. I want to hear them sing!

I'm sure they would work, but like you said, the EQ may not be exactly as Bose intended for the Series VI. But since you are currently EQ-less, and assuming the 550 is in good shape and the price is right, I'd sure give it a whirl.

Hi mate, thanks for the reply. Yeah I think the different series speakers are pretty much the same it’s just the equalisers that were different in their levels. So basically I can make my series 6 sound like the 3 or 4 with a 550. He wants $550 AUD which is a decent price for a good amp with equaliser in built I think.
 
I have no idea how Aussie dollars relate to US, but if you feel it's fair, that's all that matters.

You're gonna adjust the EQ to your taste anyway, so although the "built-in" boost may differ from what was used with the Series VI EQ, I'd be quite surprised if you heard any problem. I think it'll rock just fine.

It’s about 400 US and in perfect working condition. Two little scratches.
 
Is the 550 the SCR? (Spatial Control Receiver.) You'll need the speakers to be the 3-terminal version to use that feature. Not a big deal, but nice.

IMO, if the speakers were the same/similar enough they probably wouldn't have different EQs for the different series, I/II, III/IV, V/VI.

I have measured curves for Series II eq and for Series VI. Don't have the middle one.

No doubt it will work and be way better than no EQ, just not optimum I suppose.

EQ for Series I and II would be quite different from Series III thru VI. III/IV difference from V/VI...not so much.
 
the bose unit I had 125W was built around the 3, I used it with the 6 and it was fine. Bose techs said it should get me 'mostly' there.

probably fine but would be nice to have the matching EQ.
 
i miss that unit.. was really nice w phono and the aux/ DAC streamer combo sounded really good for it's age, unrecapped.

Yeah I understand the 1 and 2 were quite different (made for 100wpc+), but wasn’t sure how the others differed if at all. Cheers
 
Somewhere in my searches I came across new equalizers made for 901s. That was before I opened mine up and fixed it so I never went further. How many watts is the receiver? 901s love watts. Ran mine with a 500 watt Soundcraftsmen. 901 series 4
 
End of the day, 901s are no different than other speakers inasmuch as how much power you need depends how loud you want to play.

I started my Series VI on a Harman Kardon PM650. For low to moderate levels, a bit subective I know, you could get by. But, if you want to kick it up to high gear they can make use of more for sure. I run mine now with 200wpc and have run them from 300wpc. Personally, I think that's pretty close to the maximum practical power. Oh, maybe they could absorb more but in terms of decent performance I think they're pretty close to all in about that point.

Maybe when I finally get the Series II hooked up I'll opine differently for power on those. I have some pretty big amps that could be used if necessary, but I don't want to blow them just for sake of finding the max.
