Do These Things Go Together?

I don't even know where to post this topic. That's how stupid I am, so I just stuck it here without even knowing if it goes here.

I got the Realistic Sta-2300 Receiver. I just got a Model 31-2000A 200 Watts Equalizer.

Is it easy to just hook them together.

$20 for the EQ. I'm so happy.

I took an image fr an ebay one.

Input on the eq goes to the record out

Output goes to record in

You do that to your tape inputs on the receiver and turn it on

Regardless of what the faceplate says, EQs do not produce watts. If the receiver has a Pre in/Main out set of RCA jacks, hook up the pre out of the receiver to the in of the EQ. Then run the out of the EQ to the main in of the receiver.

If these jacks do not exist on the receiver you can use of the tape monitor ins and outs and hook up the same way. One caution; some receivers put out too large a signal through the tape jacks and this will overload the receiver causing it to sound distorted but this will not damage the receiver.

You what's weird? This receiver kind of makes everything have too much low-end.
I mean even I notice it. It says FLAT somewhere on the dials of the treble, bass, and mid-range on the receiver. I just turn down the bass below the FLAT line.

Will the new EQ help with this low-end problem?

Sure, you would set the receiver flat and do the controlling with the eq. Just remember any adjustments should be down (cut), not raise (boost).
 
I had this STA-2300 new when it came out and still do and never had too much bass with the bass control at the middle or flat ever even with loudness on and an EQ in the mix so I don't get what you are referring to?Could be your speakers are causing this depending on what you're using?:)

Is your Loudness button on or pushed in?This could be the problem or not depending on where the Bass control is set and also what brand/size of speakers are being used?:scratch2:

Man I'm tempted, sooooo tempted, to get out to Best Buy and check out some Polk speakers. The speakers I have are Pioneer 1984 CS G201.
Vintage Hi-F is there a website besides ebay to buy vintage gear? I contacted two places for a receiver and never heard back fr either. craigs' has worked best, but there isn't a big market here in the peninsula.

J Geils Bloodshot album sounded pretty good on this new system (the eq isn't hooked up yet). It was Abbey Road that sounded bass-y. So did The Specials' second album. idk. I need to try all the advice first before I start whining about what was too bass-y and what wasn't!

I was thinking either that, or perhaps (as has happened to me) some of the knobs were removed and re-attached with the pointer in the wrong spot (When they say to set your treble/bass controls flat, they mean to set them at 12:00, which in most cases is the 'neutral' position - If, say, the bass-knob was removed/re-attached improperly, then 12:00 may no longer be 'neutral' - Try turning the bass-knob all the way to the left and see if the pointer is at the 'zero' setting - If you turn it all the way left and the pointer winds up at like 6:00, then the knob is not lined up correctly - Easy to compensate for this if it is indeed the case).

By the way, that's a nice receiver. I think it's the same as the STA-2100 except it has LED's for the meters instead of needle-types. Last of the big 120-watters.

Did you only play the 1st song on "Abbey Road"? That always sounds too-bassy to me. The rest of the album seems perfect.

I will further explain that, then you can tell me Im nuts. I think there is at least the potential to add noise when boosting. Id rather avoid doing that if possible (not that I use one all that much). You can set one wherever you want, I just prefer to try to be more conservative.

I have no Idea why I have been summoned for this question (just seamed random) but here's a good place http://www.soundsclassic.com/ they both sell and service gear. Not the cheapest place but they are pretty reasonable.
 
The advantage to patching the EQ into the Tape in/out is that if you don't want it inline on your system, it is merely a flip of a switch to remove it. If you use the main in/out, it is with you all the time unless the EQ has a switch to engage or disengage it.

Unless you have a very good ear and knowledge of bandwidth and its effect on an amplifier's output, an equalizer is often time more of a troublemaker than a helper. Only you can decide if you have the ear and the knowlwdge to use an EQ properly. Often times people set it up with what is known as "disco smile" which boosts the bass and treble and defeats everything in between. This does nothing for your sound, but it looks cool. The "smile" has had something to do with the destruction of numerous amps and speakers due to clipping the lows and high in the amplifiers.

If you install this EQ into your system, I suggest that you use a good bit of restraint in it's use until you can educate yourself on what the EQ is, and is not, capable of in an audio system. Good luck and have fun.

I get what you're saying now and while I don't believe that a well built component will add any significant noise to a signal (as in audible), you're explanation helped clarify what you meant and that's really all I wanted to know..

Don't buy new speakers.

I don't know what you had in mind spending but little in the current line up shares the bang for the buck factor of a vintage pair of JBLs, Dahlquists, Klipschs or almost any other well regarded older speaker.
