Do These Things Go Together?

Julie,
Before you try the EQ, make sure your speakers are not in the corners of the room. and are at least a foot from any wall. If you put them in the corner, or close to a wall, you will get too much bass. Also, they should be up off the floor. Milk cartons work well for this, or you could get speaker stands. It is best if the tweeters are at ear level in your listening position. Get the sound as good as you can before you start using an EQ, and the result will be better.

Please don't take offense but I will be candid here> Those are not one of Pioneer's better efforts. A friend gave me a pair of CS-G301's (your speakers' big brothers) that were quite awful. The midrange and tweeters turned to be blown so I sold them to someone who wanted the woofers. You can test yours by playing them with the grill covers off and covering the woofer with an album cover to determine if all the drivers (speakers) are playing.
The good news is they set the bar pretty low, so getting something better will be easy. The equalizer will help tone down the excessive bass. They could also benefit from redoing the crossover electronics, which may have deteriorated with age, but I doubt it is worth the effort on that model .
