Do you cull your collection of LPs? How do you decide?

an open-ended orgy of acquisition ad infinitum! :)

Just wanted to quote that for posterity. It's exactly what I'm trying to purge myself of. A lot of this forum/site seems to revolve around the endless need for 'more' instead of 'better'.

I don't really cull the collecton because I'm exceedingly careful of what goes in there in the first place. One thing that makes it easier, space-wise, is to only obtain 1 copy of any given album. No multiples here. If one needs replacing I literally throw out the bad copy and keep the better one once I get it . One time I was in an audiophile's home and he had 3 and 4 copies of the same LP over and over...took up a ton of room. I prefer to single out my favorite pressing and only keep that.

That's a good practice. I do the same if the copy I'm replacing isn't otherwise important (I'll keep a VG first pressing but toss a VG common reissue, for example).

The multiples in my collection are different and not necessarily better--for example, colored vinyl copies, alternative covers, pressings that differ due to mastering or vinyl thickness, etc. Or that are simply cool to have, e.g., different numbered copies of the white album--I don't go out purposely to track them down but if I'm in a record store and see a used numbered copy of the white album on the Apple label, and its in good shape with all the extras, and the sticker price isn't outrageous, well... it's just too hard to pass up, even though I already have a few of them.

Yep. There are always a few things that you will - inexplicably or justifiably - hold on to, as it seems to me it should be. But most of it is just stuff - fun, to be sure. I donated tons of more common (and some not so common) lp's about a month ago, stopped in a couple days later and struck up a conversation with a gentleman who was browsing the vinyl there. He's re-discovering the joys of consoles, turntables and vinyl. That pile in his cart was all once mine-every last one, and he was thrilled to find it. I got a kick out of talking to him, and it was great to see someone with "SCORE" in his eyes. Most of those titles I had done the exact same thing in the exact same spot 5 years ago. It happens, let someone else enjoy it.

And there's always an upside. CD's don't take up as much space, for instance - ha.

UPDATE!

So get this, I run into the same guy tonight flipping albums. Start yapping and turns out he just scored a pair of Tannoy GRF's-PROF (with 15" Monitor Golds)

He had started a conversation with a guy at the same spot about 2 weeks ago and things led to things. He said he hauled them out of the gentleman's garage with an appliance dolly. The kicker:

1. Four of the albums he bought tonight were my donations (ha, they'll sound FAR better on his system with those speakers.)
2. He didn't give me the gentleman's (original Tannoy owner) name, but the area he bought them in is MY FREAKIN' neighborhood.

Sheesh, I dunno about this Karma stuff. Sincerely, had it been me instead of him I wouldn't have bought them anyways - he paid a pretty decent sum for them - so I couldn't have pulled it off no way, no how... but still he got them for far less than the open market would garnish. He honestly seemed dumbstruck that he'd climbed the Mt. Everest of speakerdom through a casual conversation at a GW used lp bin. What a great hobby this is, ha! Just thought I'd share.

Mea culpa JohnVF to hijack and dust off this thread, this just seemed like the best place to put this - I'm sure you can appreciate the - i dunno - irony or serendipity of the whole deal.

How timely (for me)...

I just moved again, and I've decided not to unpack the 1500 LPs I've packed and unpacked several times before. So, I'm saving maybe 15% of them, and the rest will be going to Denver's premier used vinyl store (Denverites will know where), in two loads; about 600 or so next week and the rest after the first of the year. Some go back to the '50s and are in dreadful shape - however, most are excellent, after I learned how to care for vinyl and got a 'table that didn't track at 4 grams...

I am fairly careful in my buying so there isn't too much extra. I just got shelving to put up so my albums will be out of boxes for the first time in ages. I probably have some dups that I will get rid of and a few that I know I will never play.
At one point in college I sold my least listened too 100 in the center of campus to raise money to get through my last year. I still regret that. Every once in awhile I go searching and then.. I remember. So I tend not to trim too deeply.

I go through mine every now and then, pull out anything that may be questionable as to whether or not I want to keep it, then toss them on the turntable as time permits. I keep "for sale/trade" and "thrift store" piles for the losers. There's also a big box of duplicates for a/b comparisons.

Certainly I can appreciate that. So much of this hobby is about being in the right place at the right time. It also helps to get the word out about what you like. I have several people who call me up now and then asking if I'm interested in stuff they've found..that's how I ended up with my Cabasse speakers this week. Monitor Golds? Mmm...I'd love to try a pair. Where would I put them? I think I'd have to cull more of my album collection. Which I've yet to touch since starting this thread.
