Do you own or know of a speaker that does it all?

Axcel

Accuphase all the way
I am always amazed at peole that own a speaker that needs special placement or plays a certain type of music better then others? Does anyone have a speaker that plays all types of music well and requires no special placement to get the best out of them?:thmbsp:

What speakers do you know of that don't require attention to placement? I've honestly never come across a pair of speakers that didn't improve dramatically, or fall apart sonically, depending on where they were in the room and in relation to me.

The only "speakers" that aren't dependent on room placement would be headphones.

As for everything else, I'd say give Legacy Whispers a shot. And, even then, a lot depends on personal taste.

Not meaning to brag, but my Altec 19's are not all that fussy about power, placement, or other picadillos! Most all the ones before them did require more attention to placement.

I typically find good horn systems to be less fussy about their overall placements. Even K-horns are pretty forgiving if you only get a simple corner right.

All digressions aside, I've yet to hear one speaker that does it all, although I've heard of some $50,000(Focal/JM Lab) speaker systems that are purported to do justice to all kinds of music. But in the real world of you and me, there will always be compromises with any system we may own. I think the more important question is, "is there a speaker out there that will do justice to the type of music you like? I think the answer to that is an unequivocal, yes.

I personally think there are many speakers that can do it all, old and new. Problem is, often times the room sucks, the source sucks, the amplification sucks or the speakers are placed non symmetrical or in some kind of sucky position. As such, the listener really isn't listening to their full capabilities.

Find your spot in the room and toe-in the speakers accordingly. My Klipsch speakers require more toe-in than do my JBL's. It has been worth it to fuss about it.

I agree with DC, the big Altec, Klipsch, and EVs don't seem to care where you put them, they perform nicely just about any place you care to put them.

I like my La Scalas at whisper quiet volumes, at earsplitting volume, with rock, jazz, classical, acoustic, etc. Placement is what it is because my room is too small.

Go see Cleveland Orchestra or one in its same level which are few and you will quickly see there is no such thing as a speaker that can measure up to live. But it sure is fun looking to find one:D

Getting placement right is the key to making any speaker sing...no getting around it.

Good question. I have found that I need two different types of speakers for the different types of music I listen to. For Jazz, Blues, Classical & Blues my JBL Harkness or EV Regency's rule. The sound is huge and fills the room with tons of wonderful sound. I have a large space 18 x 30 with 12ft. ceilings. When I listen to rock or any other kind of electronic music I like my JBL 240ti's or L150A's and the speakers are placed aiming directly at me. I don't think it possible to have a speaker that does it all from my experience. Unless you only listen to one genre of music. On the other hand it all depends on the room. Just my 2 cents.

Altec A-7....though you have to be careful where you put them, not for sonics but for where you'll walk in the living room....

I'm the lucky owner of a set of IMF TLS-80mkII - to my ears they are extreemely neutral and plays whatever is served - classic, pop, rock - you name it , and they are pretty unsensitive to placement .

Despite their size, you don't hear the speaker, just music
