This is probably an 'old farts thread' but do you remember when you had a stereo but no TV?

Might have been in your college dorm....or your first apartment/house.....

Social life for young people revolved around the stereo and music back then - and maybe a 'Saturday Night Live' gathering on the mid-1970s, followed by more music.

Ah yes, those were the days..... :music:

Do you remember what equipment and music you were listening to back then?

Stereo and no TV? Not for me :no:

When I was living in the dorms ... we had a day room which was a TV communal area.

1st month there ... I was watching a TV show one night and group of guys came in and said they wanted to watch something else and preceded to change the channel with a :finger: attitude.

I had my own TV/cable in my room the next week. ... the stereo (POS component rig) was already in there.

Hell I sure do. I'm 68 now and still not much of a TV watcher. Neither is my wife. Some sports, maybe a movie we like. Some days the thing doesn't even get turned on.
 
Yes when I was still at home! Pioneer SX-626 receiver, Garrard SL-65B TT w/ Shure M91ED cart and EV ETR-16 10" two way speakers. Later splurged on a Teac casette, second down the line model but can't remember the model. After getting married, we also had a 12" B/W TV for a couple of years. After a couple of years we could afford a 23" MGA color TV - woo hoo! I still don't watch much of the mindless rot TV has to offer.
 
After moving out of my parents home, I was without a working TV for about fifteen years.

My stereo starter system:

speakers: Altec A7 (VOT), Advent

TV was in our House(parents)since 1953.Some kind of Stereo(tubes) before that!Listen to Music primarily but 53 was the beginning of TV in Canada so it was unusually new at the time but without much of any variety programing but the Indian Head Test Pattern on CBC was neat to watch while playing some tunes on LP's:):thmbsp:
 
Before we were married my wife and I had no TV for about ten years or so, then when I was laid off for about a month there was a demonstration of the new at the time digital cable, I went to the demonstration and came back with digital cabel TV. All those years without TV I never missed it at all and I always had a stereo system.
 
I remember when we got our first color TV. TWO broadcast channels. My folks had this GREAT tube console where we could play records.

Had a Quadraphonic system for a short time. Lafayette LR-4000, four Marantz Imperial 7 speakers and a Pioneer PL-12 table with a Shure M91ED for SQ records.

Than did not last long.

Moved into a four Bedroom house one block from UNR. In came the Altec Barcelonas biamped with an ESS amp on the woofers and a Mac 275 on the horns. 7C preamp, Dual 701 and Empire 598 tables. Denon 103 on the Empire. AT15Sa on the Dual. Revox A77.

The house that never slept....and no TV. :music:
 
My first place didn't have a TV for about a year and a half. I worked long hours so after getting home it was a cold beer, some music on my stereo then bed. Days off were for fishing mostly. :D

Zenith music console.

I don't think TV was invented yet, or if it was, we didn't have a B&W one yet.

Similar deal here. As a real small kid my folks bought a phonograph, broke records when it dropped them on the platter. Old 78s back then. Dad traded it in on a 17 inch Zenith B&W. Big hit in the neighborhood for a while. Had that thing for years, had to jimmy the tuner to keep it on station. Different era back then. Also remember when I got married, we moved into a small house in town, with cable, real big deal there to have more that 3 snowy channels.
 
Stereo and no TV? For me that would be from about 1999 to present. I do own two antique TV sets, but neither is hooked up.
 
I have about 10 antique TV's, with 5 in the house. 4 are recapped/working and two are ready to go with DVD players though RF modulators hooked up to them. Tonight, I think the original "Cape Fear" is worth another watch. Bob Mitchum really was a badass back in the day.

I remember the TV being on all the time but the only time you turned the stereo down and the TV up was during SNL. The equipment was Crazy Eddie and the music was Mink DeVille / Blondie era WNEW-FM.
 
That's right now. I haven't had cable in a decade and no tv for the last 6 or so. I do have a laptop I watch netflix and YouTube on so I guess it's kind of cheating.
