Stealing the sticky...

And the answer is yes. No I don't have the wrong website. Vintage audio has become the backbone of AK. Scoring awesome gear for next to nothing maybe constitute cheap, but it's again a passion for audio.

If it wasn't for AK, I wouldn't have seeked out my Yammie 820, nor my H/K turntable. Nor would I have bought my first Klipsch from an AK member. I got an amazing system for "cheap" Cheap and vintage, you bet...

Guess I need to find a new forum then.

It's about audio gear. People do themselves a disservice by sticking their heads in the sand about anything outside of the camp they've adopted.

But the vintage blinders have gotten old. Thanks for ruining what could be something great- an audio forum not about anything except audio-no attitude, no camps, no anything.

I completely agree with you. Getting awesome gear for awesome prices has been a lot of fun. Nothing like 800 mile road trips to pick up a piece of gear of two on the cheap. :)

That being said, I think they closed this thread for a reason. I agree with you, but I know there are members that have a $10,000 turntable, $3,000 needle, $10,000 Pre Amp, Amp, etc... and that's fine! If I had money, I'd be doing the same thing. :)

AK is about the love of music. Plain and simple.

But only if you listen to the oldest, cheapest gear that you can find, right?

Nope, not at all. :) It's all about the tunes, baby. However you listen to them is your thing, and no one has a right to judge you for it. You gotta keep an open mind at all times, and understand that stereo equipment didn't cease to exist post 1982. There are still companies out there pushing the boundaries of what we previously knew as the high standard, and I only wish everyone on this forum was fortunate enough to afford what they are producing. For those that can and will buy these products, I have no harsh feelings towards them... well, except envy of course. :music:

I was referring to the original post, and agree- it should be about audio with no attitude. And that goes several ways. Expensive, cheap, old, new- doesn't matter. But what it intends to be, and what it has become is illustrated by the first post. We have a number of members who think that 'no attitude' is synonymous with "vintage and cheap".

Trust me, if I didn't believe in the 'all audio, not attitude" anthem, I'd have more than the few choice words I've already written about the first post in this dead-horse thread. One of them would start with bull and end in ****.

You don't question moderation- and that sticky is there by the moderation staff.

AK is about the love of Great music and sound for me. If you can get that result on the cheap, than kudos to you. I look to AK as a source for music recommendations, and for getting direction on changing things in my system. I dont look for the cheapest options out there. I look for the best options. Building a system takes time, and experience. you put something together, and see if it gives you what you were looking for. sometimes it does. sometimes you discover a change in you system you did not expect. Its pretty fun.

In the end, its a hobby focused around what I love most.. Music. like every hobby, its not about money.

+1 I agree. And I'm in the vintage camp.

These disguised versions of the old v new thread are getting old.

Just to put the sticky in context here's Grumpy's short but concise statement:

If you do then you have the wrong web site. Its about a community who appreciates all audio and music.

Thread was locked so every Tom, Rick, and Harry couldn't contaminate it with their twisted troll look at it. To promote their own individual muse like it's some new clever revelation.

He put in his thumb and pulled out a plum
And said "What a good boy am I!"

It's not about cheap, although there's a special pleasure in getting a bargain.

It's about getting the most you can get for the money you have, whether little or lots.

It's about maximizing your benefits, regardless of what you want and where you stand financially.

IMO, we would do ourselves a much greater service if we quit trying to pigeon hole gear by when it was made. Basically it comes down to is it gear which helps you reach the goal you have in mind - be it vintage gear or new gear.
Gear is gear no matter when it was made - does it suit your purpose and does it have the sq you are looking for.
What's better - an apple or an orange ? I think they are both pretty darn good
One thing tho - just by virtue of being vintage doesn't suddenly turn it into something it is not. I would guess that most people are comparing a lot of this gear with middle of the line HT receivers to begin with and really have no idea what new 2 channel gear even sounds like.
If it was low to midfi gear when it was made, time doesn't change that. On the other hand, it it was near totl or totl, there is a pretty good chance that if you do restore/recap/upgrade it, it is probably still going to be a very nice piece of gear - maybe not the best, but matched with the right components, I'd dare to say there is a pretty good chance most people would be very happy with the sq.
Then again, there is some really nice new gear you can buy that you don;t have to worry about re-capping/restoring/upgrading and have the benefit of new technology, caps etc (imo, film caps can make a HUGE difference in a piece of gear and comparing 1970 film caps to new film caps isn't even a fair fight)
Apples and oranges - they both taste good to me

I'd like to get the maximum bang for my audio buck. I won't kill myself if next week I discover something better than what I blew my money on this week, but I'd be at least a little happier without that discovery.

I enjoy it here, but I must admit that the learning is the lion's share of that enjoyment. The lion's share of the learning is where and how to best spend my limited funds. I'll freely admit that I am cheap, both of necessity and by nature. For someone cheap, I do believe that vintage is where it's at.

It doesn't matter what you are shopping for, old or new, this forum and its members can help you to find the gear that's right for you.

It is the wrong question. The correct question and properly so, would be, what is AK to you (that is tell me about your audio hobby or any of the other none audio hobbies discussed here)? It can be many things to many people and still be the AK that I like and enjoy.

When one asks, is AK about X, Y or Z it is automatically limiting and controversial.

Even though, it is all the same, because AK is the sum of it's parts (The people here).

Conflict is a part of human nature and the moderators do a good job of keeping everything under control.

Vintage has a stronger presence than new here on AK, from what I can see. But new isn't insignificant by any means. "Cheap" by itself is ambiguous. Do you mean cheap gear, or a cheap price for good/great gear? I find it tends to be the latter. People enjoy getting a real bargain and AK is supportive of that.

One other observation: AK is also about how great sound can be achieved with less money than you think. "Less" doesn't mean cheap either. It's all about relativity.

There isn't nearly as much snobbery on AK as on other forums. People respect lower budgets here. A new person comes on board asking about what kind of system they ought to look for with a $300 budget, and they're not booed off the stage. They are welcomed and given advice. I like that.

Questions & answers, show & tell, learning facts and dispeling fiction, educating & being educated, learning about the latest and the past (good or bad) a good deal or a so so deal, etc...Just a few things I get from A.K. To me Audio Karma has been and still is a priceless website and feel fortunate to participate. Good Day to all at A.K.

Exactly. Grumpy was straight forward with the meaning of the original sticky, no need to question it or make it troll bait.
