Do you think AK is about vintage repairs?

For me, it's just sharing a hobby with like minded people. God knows I don't run into any audio nerds in my day to day dealings. I wish I was educated in the repair side of the hobby, but no.
Still, its fun to converse a little with others on some non technical topics such as music, sound systems, and such.

What's your view on the subject, what draws you personally on AK and what is your purpose here, so to speak? What's it all about?
I enjoy reading and commenting on things of interest to me related to audio, and do the same on a photography hobby forum. Yes, this site seems to have a strong emphasis on the acquiring and repair/maintenance of old gear, which is of no interest to me at all, but occasionally there are other topics to engage in. It's a pleasant place to visit while I'm enjoying my morning coffee or, like now, waiting for the potatoes to finish cooking.

I came to AK to read about a DIY phono preamp design which intrigued me. I’ve stayed because the people seem to be down to earth and cool. They tolerate me even though I don’t fire up my soldering iron but once in five years! :music:
I'm often quite amazed at some of the work people do here, whether DIY projects, repair work, or assembling kits. I know I once owned a soldering iron and even used it a couple times, but that might have been back in the 1970's. I did buy a conrad-johnson preamp kit in the '80's but, with no thought of taking it on myself, simply paid the service tech to put it together for me. Come to think of it, I did solder some banana plugs to a shorter run of Linn wire that I needed at one point, but that was probably 35 years ago, and that kind of job was about the limit of my skill.

Yes I do. AK seems to favor those who seek information on various repairs regarding vintage audio equipment. Too bad I know nothing about the subject. "Wish I could read....all those service manuals".

Otherwise, there is a finite number of meaningful discussions regarding audio that can be had on a website, since music is something you hear and it's all very subjective. Maybe my amp needs all caps replaced but sound fine to me, so I'll say "boy, this amp of mine sure sounds good, no repairs needed for another 40 years. Lucky me". Also, my ability to describe what I hear is mediocre at best, so I'm not very useful here.

Then there is the section where people tell about how they got that deal that most of us can't touch. That's OK.

its for everybody!

I originally found Audiokarma when researching equipment I was looking to buy, mostly vintage but not always. Anytime you want an opinion on obscure gear, it's usually on here. I like getting opinions of other everyday people, and not professional reviewers or paid youtube shills. I think repair is just something that goes along with owning gear. People are always going to be learning and have questions, and it still amazes me just how helpful some people will be sharing their knowledge and expertise, expecting nothing in return. So I try to do the same, if there's a question I feel is within my limited knowledge to help out on, I answer it. I think that is what this site is all about

Love the photo Mr Boochie, over on www.stereo2go.com there's some amazing photographers, check out Kent's Threads, he owns everything (NOS) and he posts beautiful photos of it. And that 2251, I'm still looking for a platter for mine, the TT was in the trash at a garage sale, the women said some kid walked off with the platter cuz he like the sound when he banged on it....

Over on Garage Journal is the Moto Makeover Thread, he is a professional photographer and does some amazing forum photos. There is some stereo equipment but it's about 90 pages in, the thread is a great addictive read about house/motorcycle/camper and more.

Beautiful! My little red convertible is waiting for an engine transplant when it gets a little warmer.

If you haven't been over there, the Garage Gallery Threads are a rabbit hole for cool stuff, especially work garages and killer cars. Check this thread out, the guys build vintage aircraft style furniture, the first cabinet would make a great stereo rack.

GJ Members have no problems fixing/restoring stuff.

Exactly this + enjoying music for me. AK is a fantastic place.

I tend to avoid the off topic stuff and find it irritating when audio related threads get hijacked by non-audio STUFF.

So, yes, I come her for audio related chit chat primarily for repairs, but also for informed opinions on related topics.

For other stuff I have other sources.

Sorry, posts removed.

It's so many things, depending on what I'm doing.

For instance... non vintage.... Reading up on on DAC, preamp, amp reviews from members when purchasing new. Learning what's out there, price ranges, potential sweet spots, popular equipement, alternatives, etc.

Vintage... Reference when treasure hunting, reference and community when troubleshooting & a place to share work put into pieces along with impressions on sound

Music... Love going through the listening threads when I'm bored of the mountain of media I have at home or recommendations for new stuff on the streaming platforms.

Listening.... Speaker setup, measurements, room setup & treatment, tube or dac rolling, etc.

Learning & DIY... learning about amp topologies, crossover slopes, bi-amping, modding, etc.. from members who experiences or even learn alongs when folks try new things.

Nostalgia... It's fun with the off topic stories that are music, tech or equipment related. It's no secret there's a large quorum of folks who are able to wax nostalgic stories and memories, which gives the screen-names personalities and a sense of community.

Great place for ideas of all sorts but I do have to admit, learning about & fixing vintage stuff is one of the biggest draws.

I enjoy most of the threads and actually read them. I like it when people bring a broken piece of vintage gear back to life or find a new model that peaks my interest. I've learned so much in the little time on this forum on how to repair several pieces of gear that would have cost me much more to get fixed else where. You can talk about your dog if you want...
