Does a Fisher 400 pair with a Fisher X-1000

I found a great deal on a Fisher 400 but I have to drive three hours one way. Would this model 400 even pair with my X-1000. It looks like the 400 is its own receiver. How does one get stereo out of a X-1000?

$220 and a three hour drive for the Fisher 400. Is it worth it?

The 400 is most likely the all in one receiver with preamp/amp/tuner. Is the deal you are looking at worth it? Maybe - if its super clean and complete then yes, if it was stored outdoors in the elements for 30 years, then no. This is supposed to be discussed in "dollars and cents" by the way.

What do you mean by "pair"?

The x-1000 is an integrated stereo amplifier (preamp and amp on same chassis). To get stereo out you plug left and right inputs in, hook up speakers to left and right channels out and make sure the output selector is set to stereo.

Did you ever get that X1000 up and running? you have the basis for a nice system there and only need a receiver to get what the 400 would add to it.
i'm in OC and have an X1000 and Mark O is making me a new volume control for, can't do much better that the X1000, but I also feel you can't have too many Fishers...tough choice

Yes I got the x-1000 singing petty. I guess I had a mental lapse but the question I meant to ask is would the 400 be a good tuner to pair with the 1000. I guess I answered my own question as hooking up two integrated receivers would be overkill. What I really need is a fisher tube stereo stand alone separate I can connect to my 1000. Anyhow I'm a sucker for vintage gear and am gonna pick up the 400 anyway. What will the future hold?.

By the way there is a guy on ebay who sells volume controls, is that the same guy you're talking about building you one. I'm in the market for one of those too.

google Mark Oppat, no affiliation, he's made controls for my 500C, X202B and now the X1000, and a few others that I will ask him to do when that is done
 
You need an FM-1000 if your trying to match an X-1000. If you don't want to spend $1800+ though, you could get an FM-200-B

Or, any good Fisher tube tuner would work just fine..... The 400 is a receiver,
restore it and enjoy as a separate piece.

FM 1000 yes that's the one. I don't have $1800 though. Does the tuner really cost more than the amp.

I visited Mark about a year ago in Plymouth MI, near where I grew up in Redford. Very interesting "tour". More vintage radios than hi fidelity audio. He bought out much of the inventory of Norwest Electronics and Radio Specialties when they went out of business years ago. Norwest used to stock a lot of pot parts, mostly Clarostat if I remember correctly, and could sell you the pieces to make up almost any pot you wanted. Unfortunately, once Marks inventory is used up, it's gone, so there may be some limitations as to what he has available. He will match sections for multi gang pots subject to availability. He also has quite a few tubes but from the appearance of the basement, it might take a while to find what you need.
 
Depending on how handy you are, there is a fairly straightforward Dave Gillespie mod that can allow the front end output (phono/tape pre-amp, tone controls, tuner) to be tapped and send to a power amp like the X-1000. It converts the reverb output jacks ("Space Expander") to a pre-out, amp-in configuration. That means you could also use another pre-amp/tuner to feed the 400 as a power amp as well. Search "Improving the Fisher 400" in this forum and you can read up. I think the 400 threads are in the stickies as well.

I modded a 400 following Dave's guidance and it is an outstanding receiver (very good in stock form, too!). The 500c/800c/1800 are awesome, but the 400's hold up very well against them as well.
