Does anyone else run a tapeloop like this?

VintInfinity

Tactophonic
I got bored of the sound of my main system, so I hooked up a McIntosh Mac 1900 tape loop to the main preamp -> power amp system on the big Infinity speakers.

It just sounds good... warms up the tone a bit with the EMIT tweeters. Very spacious, and I have just been enjoying it even more than usual since I hooked it up like this...

So it goes from my laptop to the Mac 1900, to a Yamaha C-65 to the PC2002M amp and BGW bass amp out to the Kappas. Also, the FM tuner on the Mac.

Does anyone else use an old receiver to add tone for a newer system?

never thought of trying such a set up. guess im afraid that i might blow something. i dont have a lot of money to expend if something blows.

The beauty of having the gear is you can hook it up however you want. If it pleases you that's about all that matters.
My personal opinion is that everything other than the source, the speakers and the MAC1900 is unnecessary and likely just degrading the sound. If you are not finding that to be true your MAC1900 may need to be recapped and adjusted. These receivers are getting pretty old at this point!
Terry DeWick is "the man" when it comes to tuning up this kind of equipment and he recommends Nichion Muse KZ series caps in the MAC when replacing them.
If you know how to use a screwdriver and a soldering iron it's easy to do yourself as the MAC has edge connector boards. Remove 2 screws from each board and they will pull right out of the unit and you can work on it easily on your workbench!

That's my 2 cents. Happy Listening!

Vint,

Those 9s are beautiful!

I have been contemplating trying to use my three receivers to bi-amp my Kappas 7.1, but I am not sure if I am just being ignorant or what the chances of blowing something up are while trying....

The winter is fast approaching here in Germany and I can't afford to be "ohne Musik".

What do you mean aside from those things? The amps are necessary, as the MAC might clip on the low impedance load. Part of what I like about this setup is the smoother sound... maybe it is less "correct" but it certainly is very musical.

The 1900 does need a recap I am sure, and I was already looking into that for when I can afford it. I have stacked Advents, and a small pair of JBL bookshelf speakers hooked to the power section as well.

Last time I tried using the 1900 as a preamp with the power amps, I hated the sound. I tried it like this on a whim after hooking up some smaller speakers and enjoying the FM tuner of the MAC. FM sounds great on the big system (through the tape loop, but not so good as a preamp directly) so I hooked up another source through it. The CDP is still directly into the Yamaha C-65.

Thank you. I sure enjoy them both visually and musically.

The 7.1s aren't as difficult a load as the 9s are, but you may want to use power amps with higher current ratings. Ask around in the Infinity forum maybe? The EMIT-R is a bit different than the EMIT-K, and the single woofer doesn't drop down to 0.8 ohms like the dual 12"s on the 9 series. So maybe it could work.

Which receivers were you think of using? And why three receivers?

I've been running my phase linear 4000 pre amp as a sound prosesser thru a dennon 3808 avr for years . It helps... with weak sounding tapes ,mp3's and internet broadcasts..:thmbsp:

I was thinking about bi-amping using the cr- 2020 as tuner and the cr-1020 and cr-1000 as amps....

Just a wild thought just for fun........I do not know if that can be done or not, or if it is practical at all...

The reason? I have three receivers.....No money wasted...

my cr-1020, 2020, and 1000 drive the kappas 7.1 without any problems.....i have been using them for a few months now...

Now I am using the cr-2020, i want to sell the 1020 and get another 2020 or 1000 later on....

ADVHamburg, if the receivers work fine alone, they would work fine when biamping.

You can just use the CR-2020 as a tuner and amp, then send the signal to the CR-1020 or 1000 from the preouts or tape loop if you want separate volume control for the other amp. No need to use all three.

Give it a try, just be sure you have everything wired right... that is a big part of the fun for me, wiring things up and switching things around. I have read many people say to put more power on the woofers, but I have done the opposite by putting my better sounding amp on the high pass, which happens to have more power. Works fine for me. But The crossovers on the 9s are at 90Hz for the woofers instead of 500Hz on the 7.1s.

You can give it a try many different ways... CR-2020 on the high pass, or on the woofers. With either of the other two on the other half.

Thanks for the tips.......

I was thinking of vertically bi-amping when I get my second CR-1000 or CR-2020....You are absolutely right; it is fun to try new things.....

I was totally impressed when I bi-wired my Kappas; they sounded like a totally diferent speaker.......

Since the CR-2020 has a very good amp section built in, I'd use it to drive the tweeter sections (you are vertically bi-amping?) and the second amp to drive the woofers. But why another whole receiver? Why not go out through the TAPE loop to an integrated Yamaha AMP for the woofer section? Use the second receiver for some application that needs a tuner too?

snotty voice here........

What's gonna blow up? Everything is used within spec, tape loop out to tape in on the Yamaha. :)

call it ignorance on my part......i havent really used a tape player yet, nor used the tape loop function...hehe. just use the aux and the fm tuner ection most of the time.

I didn't know much either, aside from already being a tech nerd growing up... but I have learned a ton by just reading, asking and doing...

No worries.. have fun!
