Does anyone have opinions on the Akai GXC-730D Cassette Deck?

I was passing by a swapmeet yesterday, and like a fool, I had to go in and look......

Well, the guy had 3 pieces of audio stuff: I only wanted the Pioneer receiver (I'm a fan of Pioneer receivers!) but he would only sell it with an Akai GXC-730D cassette deck and a pair of Sansui SP-17 speakers. I gave him $20 for all three, so I consider the deck and speakers freebies.

I'm familiar with the Sansui speakers (they'll stay for my garage system) but I know nothing of the Akai. I like cassette decks and have a couple of lower-range Naks. I wasn't going to bother with it, but I looked it up on vintagecassette.com and found out it had the horrific price in 1979 of $600!!

Now I'm wondering if it's worth putting time into for my backup system. I know it won't be worth any real $$ but I don't sell stuff and don't care: I'm wondering if anyone knows the deck and can offer me an opinion?

Thanks!!

I am not familiar with your model, but I do have the GX912, actually, 2 of them, and they are quite good pieces.

They sound especially good with chrome and metal tape, including chrome pre-recorded music, like what you find on A&M tapes.

lube, belt and roller attention is usually all that is needed to get back on track (literally).

Have a listen and you give us your opinion.

Cheers

I own the earlier Akai GXC-760D,this too retailed for $600 (without auto reverse).
It's one of my fave vintage decks, beautifully engineered especially the round silver play/ff/rw etc buttons which even light up in different lovely looking colours.
Sound too is awesome especially on good quality pre-recorded cassettes, for recording i found it gets on very well with chrome TDK SA's.

Among my cassette decks I do have the 730D and am quite impressed with it but it needs new rewind belts and I can't really be bothered with doing it just yet. As it is it plays fine but I suffer a surfeit of riches concerning tape decks including a Nak 1000 and Pioneer 1000 and I really never listen to that medium at all. A strange feature is the ability to play in reverse although that may be a fault. Don't know. Sound quality is good, it looks great and weighs a tonne so considering you got 3 for $20 you're laughing.

Thanks guys, you've intrigued and encouraged me, I'm going to clean it up and get it running! It mostly seems to work, but clearly needs belts and a few bulbs. It appears to have been in storage for some time, but I'll do what I can and post back when I have an idea of what it sounds like.
