I realize I probably will not get an answer tonight or even next week, but if some one finds this thread, please answer it sometime in the future.

If it helps, I believe the smaller the second two numbers, the more expensive. Hence the 2285 was the cheapest of the lot. LOL.

So if your decision involves the elimination of that cheap old 2285, please consider me first in line!:D

@ Stupidhead, well you got a 2230 so you are doing pretty good then, I had one and got rid of it, but it had some crackle/weakness in one channel and I know it needed a tech :(

A couple months ago, I picked up a one owner 2238B for $224 shipped and then a bit later another one almost as nice cosmetically (a few small edge dings - - no face scratches) for $175 shipped. Both off ebey,

Both are great now after the usual dusting, vacuum, light air hose, Q-tip cleaning, face removal and cleaning, lamp replacement, Deoxit/Faderlube, etc. The second one needed more serious cleaning and actually looks as good as the one owner if you did not know where to look for the few small edge nicks.

If I came across a 2252B, a 2270, or maybe a 2230 for a good price I might bite again.

You must be new here. These guys have that data all day long and this forum gets the hits. Took em 3 hours and you gave a month or two. Well now you know.

but if you need something immediately, then it might take a while to get the answer. Many wonder what happened, no answer after just an hour. Sometimes we gotta wait for the guy with the answer. In this case those are the guys that posted above me.

Wow thank you guys, That 71 Marantz Model List did the trick! It does not have the Bs though? Can I trust the Classic-audio.com Website?

Thank You!

It looks like most sites that give the price on these have them for almost exactly $50 cheaper than the Orion Blue Book says, the Marantz info is about 15-20% higher, so I'm thinking, maybe incorrectly, Marantz inflated their prices so you would think you are getting a great deal when you walk in the store.
If you really need to know, look in the back issues of Hi-Fi related magazines, or college newspapers, around that era, to see what they were actually being sold for. It was a very competitive market back then.

That is pretty much true. Besides my day job, I worked in a large Midwest chain audio store from '74 to '76 and name brands like Pioneer and Sony sold for MSRP when first released for general sale in stores. Later in the year or as the product was in the middle of it's sale cycle, prices would come down sometimes 20% to 25%, or more, off of full retail as I recall.

Marantz also might do the same, but usually very late in the product cycle and in some markets, inventory availability and sales volume were a lot lower than the fully Japanese made and designed products. Marantz was pretty much regarded as upper tier audio gear and held prices pretty well. But, yeah, there were some markets and small shops that might have some Marantz gear at sale prices.

And if you wanted McIntosh gear, well, I only wished I paid more attention. Because, occasionally, a store demo or gear that sat in inventory way too long, might get a 30% -40% blow out mark down. I always seemed to miss out on those deals.

At least, this is pretty much as I remember it.
