Those could be EPI 100s, a very fine speaker. The model number will be on the paper tag above the speaker terminals.

Early versions had butyl surrounds on the woofers. Later versions used foam surrounds. The speakers will need to be refoamed if they have not already been refoamed. I have several pairs of EPI/Epicure/Genesis speakers. They are all top performers considering their size. They are well worth restoring.

The drivers in EPI speakers are special. The tweeter and woofer are called the Burhoe module and are designed to work together. And they work very well together. I am listening to my EPI M100 now (powered by a Pioneer SX-60 receiver. Sounds good.)

I doubt that making an EPI speaker into an econo-wave would result in better sound.

+1. Could be 100s or 110s. Great speakers. I think they're too small to change into eWaves but in any event don't mutilate them!

The yellow sticker on the back will tell you the model. From what I recall, that style of sticker is 2nd generation. That means they will have the gold trimmed tweeter, which needs to be reinforced with a bead of epoxy or hot glue so the magnet doesn't fall off the face plate. There are many sad EPI tweeter stories so handle gingerly until you do this. For transporting, lay the speaker on its grill. Once reinforced, they're ready for 50 more years.

Is this the problem???

I picked up a pair of EPI 100's today. One of the tweeters is in pieces. The central part of the inverted dome tweeter came loose. Of course, this severed the wires that connect to the tweeter itself. I can solder, but there's very, very little to solder to at this point, particularly on one side. I also probably have to worry about polarity being correct, but I can probably figure that out based on the patterns in the failed epoxy/glue that formerly held the tweeter together.

I haven't really begun messing with them yet. I don't want to spend $40 on a new tweeter on Ebay.

Any hope for this project?

Picture attached is the model tweeter I have, and though this is not pix of my tweeter, it looks pretty much like the condition it's in.

That is exactly the problem. If you can solder those wires you're a better man than me.

The good news is they don't all fail so the extra glue bead has a good chance of fixing the issue before it happens. Obviously check the speakers to be sure everything is ok first. It is still very much worth having those speakers if they are working when you get them.

Dennis, EPI 100s are sweet speakers and an easy refoam; I have done dozens. If the magnets are fine, most are, be proactive and runs a bead of hot glue or JBWeld around the magnet/basket seam on both the tweeters and woofers. The crossover is a single 8 or 10 uf cap as the drivers rolloff so synergistically that is all that is need, and they are referred to as "The Burhoe Module" and used in quite a variety of EPI models. Han has a set I did and also upgraded the terminals to 5 ways and I jus finished a set of smaller A70s here and have been playing them.

Just text me if you need any help with them after you get them.

Thanks for the offer, Andy. They are free and I really only wanted the stands but then I started looking at review of the speakers. Definitely worth fixing up.

I post better pix when I get them home.

EPI 100's were the second pair of speakers I picked up about 15 years ago when I started into buying the gear I wanted when I was a teenager. I loved them. They were easy to refoam and recap and still sing. I gave them to one of my kids when he went off to college and every time I go to his house I make him play something thru them. I'd take them back in a heartbeat. Only gave them up because I got a pair of KEF 104/2's and I was trying to be a cool dad. Definitely worth freshening up.

EPI 100’s, yum. I’ll always have a pair. Easy to refoam (I second Rick Cobb). Replace cap with a nice quality cap and your good. The EPI walnut veneer is very nice to work with. Enjoy.

Got the EPI 100s home with two huge revelations. 1. They are way smaller than I expected and 2. They are WAAAY heavier than expected. The wood is good but dirty and scuffed. Certainly can be brought back to life with little effort.

the tweet on the one speaker is there but hanging out of sight.

Good luck! I would consider a cold solder solution - the wire on the left is very close to the membrane.

Worst case a replacement gold ring is easily found. This one appears to already have an epoxy bead.

eBay

From the pics it looks like you have foam filet (Boston-style) surrounds. Replace with same, attached the same way. I get my surrounds (no kit) from Springfield Speaker Repair and use Aleene's Tacky glue (white PVA). I use a 30Hz tone to center the VC. Works well. You can also get surround kits from Simply Speakers or Rick Cobb on ebay.

Don't bother trying to put rubber surrounds on drivers that originally had foam. The rubber surrounds are attached differently. If you don't attach the rubber surrounds properly, you will not have full cone extension.
