Does my preamp pair with my Yamaha m85?

Hello,
I recently got a Yamaha m85 amp that I have been having trouble with ever since I put it in my system. I can't play music at an even moderate volume before the amp inevitably goes into protection mode whenever there's a peak (e.g. a crack or some static). This wasn't an issue with the junkie Mackie I had before the m85 (which I've since gotten rid of).

Current setup: sl1200mkii --> phono pre --> Dared sl2000a pre --> Yamaha m85 --> Thiel CS1.5

I recently had the Yamaha serviced by a well-respected Yamaha dealer in my area who said they listened to it in Class A for two hours and it sounded great. I'm confident the amp isn't the issue. Is the tube preamp I'm using simply not a good match for this amp?

do you use the input coupling (AC) option on your M-85?
If NO, use AC setting on your amp and if the problem stops, then see if your preamp is leaking any DC.
If you are already using the AC optinon and the amp still goes into protection even at moderate levels, you need to service the amp ASAP. These things tend to go out in a spectacular fasion, so be aware that this will ultimately happen if you do not service it.

So just plug my preamp into the back of the m85 and see what happens? How would I know if pre is leaking DC?

I may not be remembering correctly, but I don't recall that the M85 has the ability to switch between cap coupled and direct coupled input? If I wasn't so lazy, I would go check the user manual. :)

I was able to test amp/speakers with my phone and I'm able to play it plenty loud. Strengthens my belief that the preamp is the issue.

What am I looking for when I test preamp outputs? What's the right way to do this (I have an analog multimeter)?

Measure the pre-amp output RCA jacks for DC voltage. Red test lead to the center conductors. Black test lead connected the the outer RCA jackets.
 
Don't suppose you have a Dared sl2000a service manual or schematic do you?
